MOULTRIE — Brooks County took the opening kickoff and marched 56 yards to a touchdown and then never let up, surprising Tift County 35-7 on Friday at Brodie Field.

The Trojans rolled up 246 yards on the ground against the Blue Devils, who were coming off a season-opening victory over Roswell.

Quarterback Jeremy Cody rushed for 111 yards on 19 carries and Keith Christopher had 84 more for the Trojans, who are now 2-0 under Coach Maurice Freeman, who returned to Quitman this year.

Brooks County also defeated Colquitt County 22-12 in its scrimmage.

Quarterback Malcom Dixon completed 6-of-22 passes for 93 yards and Stevan Toomer had three receptions for 55 yards for the Blue Devils.

The 1-1 Blue Devils will play their final non-Region 1-AAAAA game next Friday at home against Cook.

Region 1-AAAAA teams won all eight of their games in the first week of the season, but Tift County was not the only region team to fall this weekend.

Warner Robins, playing with a heavy heart, was shut out by Grayson 30-0.

Less than 12 hours after Coach Bryan Way attended the funeral of his younger brother Joey, who died Sept. 3 of cancer, the Demons managed just 92 yards on the ground, including 30 on one run by P.J. Cunningham.

Warner Robins quarterback W.J. McAllister completed 9-of-17 passes for 70 yards, but could not lead the Demons into the end zone.

Grayson, now 2-0 and ranked No. 10 in Class AAAAA, rolled up 283 yards on the ground.

Warner Robins, now 1-1, will entertain Beach next Saturday at McConnell-Talbert Stadium.

Houston County, which won just one game last year, won its second straight shutout to open the 2008 season, blanking Fayette County 31-0 on Friday.

The Bears, under new coach Greg Robinson have shut out Groves and Fayette County by a combined 72-0.

Fayette County was 11-1 last season, but has just one returning starter.

Garrick Davis scored on 1- and 8-yard runs, Robert Williams added a 1-yard touchdown run and linebacker Derek Carter scored on an interception return.

Michael Thompson added 31-yard field goal.

Houston County will face Bradwell Institute at home on Friday.

Lowndes was tested by 2006 co-state champion Peachtree Ridge on Friday, but still came away with a 22-6 victory at Martin Stadium. The Vikings, ranked No. 2 in the nation, rolled up 270 yards of offense and took advantage of two interceptions and 90 yards of Lions penalties.

Sophomore Tyler Hunter had a big night for the Vikings, running 95 yards for one touchdown and throwing 29 yards to Gerald Demps for another.

Robert Anderson ran 36 yards for the Vikings other touchdown.

Lowndes, 2-0 and on a 16-game winning streak, will play host to 1-1 Ware County on Friday.

On Saturday, Northside-Warner Robins won its 32nd straight game, defeating Booker T. Washington High of Miami, Fla., 31-6 at McConnell-Talbert Stadium.

The Tornadoes won the 2007 Class 4A Florida state title.

The Eagles will face a second-straight defending state champion when they travel to Columbus to take on Carver High on Friday.

Carver won the Class AAA title last year, defeating Cairo in the championship game.

On Thursday, two Region 1-AAAAA teams remained undefeated, winning games that were moved up in anticipation of bad weather associated with Tropical Storm Hanna.

Like Houston County, Coffee posted its second straight shutout, taking down Pierce County 41-0 at Jardine Stadium.

Coffee rolled up 384 yards of offense, with quarterback L’Shaun Smith completing 6-of-8 passes for 145 yards and one touchdown.

Simeon Goolsby had a 40-yard punt return for a touchdown, Mark Wilson ran three times for 35 yards and a score and tight end Corey Davis had two receptions for 86 yards and a touchdown.

Coffee will play host to 0-2 Shaw on Friday.

Also on Thursday, Valdosta took its second straight 48-7 victory over a Region 3-AAAAA team when it disposed of Windsor Forest at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium.

Valdosta had 145 yards rushing and 154 yards passing and scored three times in the first quarter.

The Wildcats will play host to Jonesboro on Friday.
