Colquitt girls drop state opener

MOULTRIE — Wayne County broke open a close game with seven runs in the third inning and went on to deal the Colquitt County Crush 10-and-under all-stars a 15-4 loss in their first game of the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association state tournament in Waycross.

Wayne County led 3-1 after two innings before exploding for seven in the third, one in the fourth and four more in the fifth for the mercy-rule victory.

Colquitt County will play its first losers bracket game at 11:30 a.m. today.

Wayne County will meet Lyons at 10 this morning in a winners bracket game.

After losing its tournament opener, the Crush will have to win six straight games to claim the state championship.

The Crush had 10 hits, all singles, including two by Diana Durham.

Hayli Spradley, Chazmin Singletary, Madison Robinson, Kerri Owens, Nikki Johnson, Christy Crosby, Amber Kling and Christin Hunnicutt each had one hit.
