Tennis teams split with Valdosta

MOULTRIE — After the rest of her Colquitt County girls tennis teammates had taken care of their Valdosta opponents on Thursday at the Jim Buck Goff Recreation Complex, Cara McCalley held off Jessica Sharp and beat the rain to give the Lady Packers a 5-0 Region 1-AAAAA sweep.

The score was just the reverse in the boys match, where the Wildcats downed the Colquitt County boys 5-0.

McCalley, playing No. 1 singles won the first set 6-4 and had just started the second, when she and Sharp were pulled from the courts as it started raining.

The Lady Packers had already won and held a 4-0 advantage.

But when the drizzle stopped, the two went back out and Sharp took the second set 6-2.

But McCalley took care of business in the final set, winning 10-8.

“That was good experience for her,” said coach Linda Berl, whose team will take a 5-1 record to Tifton today for the 26th annual Tifton Rotary Club Tournament.

“She got to be out there playing all by herself in front of everybody.”

At No. 2 singles, Carli Hester won over Justina West 6-0, 6-3. Laura Murphy won at No. 3 singles over Emma Buescher, 6-0, 6-0.

Berl used Kate Reeves and Alexa Isaacs at No. 1 doubles and they won handily, 6-0, 6-0, over Heidi Wigley and Shonte Slocumb.

At No. 2 doubles, Meghan Traylor and Jana Harvin won 6-0, 6-1, over Cathy Moody and Brittany McGee.

The Colquitt County girls junior varsity played visiting Lowndes on Wednesday.

In singles, Constance Terrell won 8-5; Meghan Traylor won 8-6; Laura Robinson won 8-2; Kayla Kelley won 8-2; Katie Reeves won 8-0; and Brittany Paine won 4-0, and lost 0-4.

In doubles, Isaacs and Reeves won 8-1; Dresden Melton and Christin Smith won 8-2; Jana Harvin and Meghan Traylor won 8-0; and Laura Robinson and Kayla Kelley won 8-2.

The Packers had little luck against a strong Valdosta team on Thursday.

At No. 1 singles, AustinYork lost to Greg Tullos 0-6, 0-6. At No. 2, Blake Jenkins fell to Jamie Childree, 0-6, 4-6.

And at No. 3, Shaun Soderstrom lost to Parker Childree 2-6, 2-6.

At No. 1 doubles, Chris Harvin and Zach Owen lost in three sets 6-4, 4-6, 4-6.

At No. 2, Barclay Mitchell and Brian Berl fell to a pair of outstanding freshmen Tommy Cangelosi and Stephen Moore 1-6, 4-6.

“The effort was there,” Packers coach Grant Hammack said. “We just have to keep fighting.”

On Thursday, the Colquitt County junior varsity tennis teams played a match against Lowndes. The Packers won 6-2.

Brian Berl won a pair of singles matches, 8-6 and 8-3. Morgan Castellow won at 8-5. Stephen Tyus also took a singles victory, 8-2.

Christian Edwards fell at singles 6-8.

In doubles, Tyus and Castellow lost 8-7, 7-8, 5-7.
