Ex-Packer Hayes an All-American again

Colquitt County’s Armanti Jamal Hayes has earned another All-American designation after being part of LSU’s 4x400 team that ran a season-best 3:03.81 at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Hayes ran his leg in 46.19. Also in the foursome were Richard Jones, who ran a 45.70; Jamar Howard, 45.47; and Ade Alleyne-Forte, 46.44.

The LSU men finished fifth in the Outdoor Championships.

Hayes is now a five-time All-American, a two-time Southeastern Conference champion and four-time All-SEC.

Of this and that:

n Colquitt County’s Travis Register, wrestling with the South Georgia Athletic Club Devil Dog Greco-Roman freestyle wrestlers, won state championships at 190 pounds in both GR and FS at the recent 2009 Georgia USA Wrestling GR/FS state tournament.

Register, who also won a state championship for the Moutlrie Mat Hawgs, also won the five point throw award and also won the GR and FS at the Southeast Region USA National Tournament in Atlanta this year.

n Colquitt County’s Adam Giles stands in 29th place in the Southern Dirt Tour at Albany Motor Speedway.

On June 6, Giles took the pole and led the entire race to win the B Main race and $400.

Also racing were Colquitt County’s Charles Sealy, Kyle Bridges, Justin Weeks, Jeffrey Baggett and Jay Johnson.

n Colquitt County High’s fall sports — football, cheerleading, softball and cross country —can begin practicing Aug. 1.

n The Colquitt girls softball team will play its first game at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 11, at Packer Park against Bainbridge.

Coach Carman Phillips’ Lady Packers will play their first Region 1-AAAAA game at 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 25, against Valdosta at Packer Park.

n The Colquitt County 11-12 A All-Stars will open play in the GRPA state tournament at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Magnolia Sports Complex.

Colquitt County is the host team and will open against the District II champion.

The eight-team, double-elimination tournament will run through Saturday, when the championship game is scheduled for 10 a.m.

Also this week, Colquitt County 13-14 All-Stars are heading to Thomson; the 10-and-under All-Stars are going to Dublin; and the 10-and-under girls All-Star Sliders are heading to Vidalia as those team chase state championships.

n The annual Georgia-Florida-Alabama Minor League Baseball Reunion is scheudle for Aug. 21-22 and longtime chairman Clint Chafin wonders if it may be the last.

Attendance has fallen off in recent years. Last year’s event was bedeviled by Tropical Storm Fay, which hit the area during the reunion.

The reunion, which has been held the last eight years, has drawn former players, managers, bat boys, umpires and officials.

Jerry Alsup, who played for Andalusia, Crestview and Grace of the Alabama-Florida League, will be the speaker at the reunion banquet, which will be held at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 22, at the Colquitt County Agricultural Building.

Alsup has been a longtime attendee of the reunion.

For more information on the annual reunion, contact Clint Chafin at 985-9723 or 891-5622.
