MOULTRIE — Shane Slocumb of the South Georgia Youth Shooting Club was the overall grand champion at the Georgia-Alabama Junior Olympics trap shooting competition held recently at the Bridge Creek Shooting Range in Hartsfield.
The competition, which drew 61 shooters, was being held in Colquitt County for the fifth straight year.
Last year, the event drew just 42 youngsters.
Slocumb finished in a tie with Woodstock’s Dustin Anderson after finals with each having downed 139 targets.
Slocumb won in sudden death, leaving Anderson to take the silver medal.
Colquitt County’s Josh Webb took the broze medal with 135 targets.
Rounding out the top six were Jess Harless of Columbus, with 133 targets, and Trey Jones and Landon Bass of the local club, who had 128 and 127 targets respectively.
Trey Jones took the the gold medal in doubles with 167 targets.
“Trey Jones shot outstanding,” Coach Mike Simpson said.
Michael Henry of Emanuel County was second with 145 targets. The South Georgia club’s Braxton Jones was third.
Slocumb, Trey Jones and A.J. Aycock finished first among the scholastic teams.
The Columbus team of Michael Chambless, Jerry Hunter and Michael Hudson was second.
In third was the Adel trio of Spencer Ensley, Andrew Levitt and Justin Watson.
The local club swept the top three places in the intermediate team competition.
Winning the championship was the team of Tyler Lirio, Corey Davis and Dalton Thaggard.
Taking the silver medal was the threesome of Jerry Ramsey, Sam Smith and Braxton Jones.
Zach Connell, Grant Bell and Hunter Hancock combined to finish third.
A number of those who competed will travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., later this month for the National Junior Olympics competition.
The competition was held at the Bridge Creek Shooting Range’s Olympic-style facility at 3760 Dunn Road in Hartsfield.
Simpson said the local club will play host to the event next year. By then, the range is expected to have an additional bunker and a clubhouse, currently under construction, should be completed.
Most of the materials and work on the clubhouse has been donated, Simpson said.
Among those companies that have contributed are JCI, Tyson Steel, Scruggs Concrete and Flint River Timber.
Simpson said the club continues to produce trap shooters who are among the best in the country.
“We’ve had three kids on the USA Team,” Simpson said. “And we’ve got the talent to put a lot more of them there.”play host to the event next year. By then, the range is expected to have an additional bunker, and a clubhouse, currently under construction, should be completed.
