Phyllis Singletary Murphy

COOLIDGE — Phyllis Singletary Murphy, 83, a life-time resident of Coolidge, Ga., died Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009, at the Bainbridge Health Care Center, from complications of Alzheimer's disease.

Funeral services are at 11 a.m., Monday, Nov. 2, at Big Ochlocknee Baptist Church. The Rev. Harold Pullen will officiate and interment is in the church cemetery. Pallbearers are Randy Bannister, Michael Ryan Murphy, Gary Singletary, Robert Singletary, Jody Smith and Robert Smith.

She was born Phyllis Singletary in Coolidge. She was the daughter of Charles and Effie Singletary and was one of six children. She graduated from the old Coolidge High School and during World War II, attended the University of Georgia where she lived in the Phi Mu Sorority house. She taught in public schools until her marriage to Jarvis Wright Murphy, also of Coolidge, in 1946. Devoting her early life to being a homemaker, raising a family, and taking care of her husband, she and her family spent weekends at the Gulf Coast, fishing and picnicking along local rivers, going for long Sunday drives, or sharing large family meals. Later, she enjoyed gardening, collecting antiques, and painting landscapes, her family said. In the later years, she also enjoyed spending Sundays with her family, watching movies. Holidays were special to her, and her home was carefully decorated each year for Christmas, her family said.

“She will be remembered as a woman who always loved her family, a nice car, a new outfit and a good restaurant,” her family said.

Jarvis, her husband of 38 years, died in 1984.

Survivors include three children, Danny Michael Murphy of Tallahassee, Fla., Caroline Murphy of Cairo, Ga. and Linda Lucille Murphy of Washington, D.C.; three grandchildren, Brenna Katherine and Michael Ryan Murphy of Tallahassee, Fla. and Victoria Faith Murphy of Washington, D.C.; a brother, Robert “Bobby” Singletary of Valdosta, Ga.; and numerous other relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 1, at the funeral home.

  • 'No' to incumbents

    Dear editor:
Joe Biden came to Cowtown (Ft. Worth) to raise funds for his boss Obama. Picked up $125,000 from some "Fat Cat" liberals, part of the millionaire's raising Obama's teleprompter fund to over $225 million.

  • Feds can't fix it

    Dear editor:
Ten years ago, the federal government, Republicans and Democrats, passed the “No Child Left Behind” program. This program was billed as a fix-all for our education system. Now, 10 years later, the same people label the program a failure.

  • Dwain Walden.jpg Cotton and philosophy on the roadside

One can go to a very expensive college and pay a bundle of money taking philosophy classes, or he can just keep his eyes open and be alert to his surroundings and collect quite an array of thought provoking ideas.

  • Will it happen here?

    Dear editor:
When America was young, a famous political philosopher from France visited our country to try to find out the secret of her greatness. (Yes, America was great. She supplied many other nations with money, just as she’s still doing today — nations who hate us and are slowly taking over our country).

  • Exclamation point

Again a bill is being pushed in Congress that specifically will say that lawmakers may not do trading based on non-public information obtained in office.
