MOULTRIE — Dear editor:

Approximately 66 years ago, WWII veterans (the good guys) returning home from fighting oppressive governments overseas, found a corrupt oppressive government at home.

A powerful corrupt family (the bad guys) had control over local and county government. They stuffed ballot boxes, used voter intimidation, confiscated ballot boxes, to count the ballots in private, and used local law enforcement (and a large number of “deputies” imported from surrounding counties) to enforce their desire to retain power.

Well, the citizens and veterans (the good guys) decided they had had enough. It came to a head on August 2, 1946. The citizens/veterans (the good guys) broke into the local armory, took auto and semi-automatic weapons and went to the local jail house to liberate the confiscated ballot boxes. A fire fight ensued with the “deputies” (the bad guys) holed up in the jail house. Eventually the citizens/veterans (the good guys) won the day and the corrupt government (the bad guys) was sent packing. The citizens/veterans (the good guys) cleaned the weapons and returned them to the armory! This was known as “The Battle of Athens”. If you don’t believe this condensed version of the story, by all means, do your own research.

I keep reading in the paper how the liberal gun control advocates mistakenly claiming that, there is no need for semi-automatic weapons, that we will never need these weapons against our wonderful honest government. The “Battle of Athens” slams the door on their arguments. The gun control critics have not learned anything from the past and have absolutely no forethought that someday their grand, or great great grandchildren may need these firearms. Who’s to say something like the above won’t or will not happen again? It has happened throughout history and the future will have a history! "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

The liberals keep saying, “We are not after your guns”. That is not true. Right now they are after semi-automatic weapons. They say no, just “assault rifles”. Well, an assault rifle has a grenade launcher, has the ability to empty the magazine with one pull of the trigger, attachment for a bayonet, etc. and is against the law to own. The “assault rifles” they want to ban is a semi-automatic rifle that is cosmetically made to look like a military assault rifle.

Liberals will not stop with these weapons; the new gun laws in New York are a prime example. When something else happens, they will go after another type of weapon. The liberals are like a cancer on the constitution, they keep nibbling, pecking, eating away at it until it will be worthless piece of paper.

They believe a person who goes out and shoots people is not at fault, it’s the weapon, “Give him some money, cut him loose, and arrest the weapon”!

It was all over the liberal mainstream media that Adam Lanza used an “assault rifle” at New Town. It started the hysteria about banning semi-automatic rifles. Well the FACTS are; the “assault rifle” was found in the trunk of his car and was NOT used in the school shootings. The FACTS are, Lanza had used 4 hand guns. Again, do your own research. Google is your friend!

The liberal gun control advocates (Senator Dianne Feinstein leading this charade, the bad guys) have based their entire argument for gun control on this misinformation. All the folks who follow the liberal mainstream media have no idea what the truth is.

In closing, we need both the liberal and conservative press to get Paul Harvey's "the rest of the story.”
