Rant and Rave for 01/08/13

MOULTRIE — Social Security

“Anyone who wants reliable information on Social Security can use Google on the Internet to bring up Social Security, then go to Just Facts, which has documentation included for each statement. There is nothing there to scare you."

Political signs

“You have been fighting signs on the right of way for years, why not charge a license fee good for 2 weeks, and fine them if not removed?"

DUI cases

“While reading the recent disposal of numerous cases in Municipal Court, I could not help but notice several with Hispanic names, with various serious traffic charges, and no drivers license. One can only assume they are illegally here. What is this county going to do, wait until someone is killed by one of them or be proactive? Most received one day in jail. Seriously? That's pathetic! Arizona now puts first-time DUI offenders in jail for 10 days and has dropped those cases by 50%. What's wrong with this picture judges?"

Her confusion

“Well, now it looks like Republican lawmakers that had the gall to do the right thing might get reprimanded by some half wit from the Tea Party. And I see Tea Party queen Amy Kremer had some choice words for those politicians. Though I can't help but remember a couple weeks ago Ms. Kremer was on a Sunday morning show and got confused on exactly what see stood for.

"She actually said that we tax corporations too much in this country and in the same breath complained how those same corporations notoriously didn't pay any federal tax or paid very little. This is the kind of mentality the Tea Party brings, but go ahead. Put more of them in Congress and maybe you'll get that small government you want. Don't say you weren't warned."

Gun sales

“The confiscated guns should be sold to a 'gun buy-back' program, and put the money into a few more security cameras."

His trips

“Really now, I think the president has really made too many trips this year for his vacation. It must be nice, it is a shame and disgrace knowing this country is headed for bankruptcy. He acts like he is definitely not worried about it. We the people are going to suffer for it, not him. Why take these trips when he knows what it is costing the taxpayers? Instead of taking trips I would be here trying to take care of all the mess that is going on in this country."

Comparison

“Well here we go again. Somebody from the right is worried about Obama's use of Air Force One.

Here's something for you to think about. George W. Bush was in Crawford, Texas on vacation 1,020 days. That's longer than John F. Kennedy was in office."

  • Our government meetings are indeed people’s business

In the past few days comments in the Rants and Raves column on this page have asked very pertinent questions relative to our involvement or lack thereof in the democratic-republic process.

I’ve often complained that instead of talking to a robot on the telephone, I would relish communication with a warm body.  Once I even spoke to a janitor who just happened to be passing by the ringing phone. He couldn’t help me with my issue, but it was comforting to know that not everyone in the building had been called in for an IRS audit.

  • Much appreciation

    Dear editor:
On Tuesday, May 14, many graduates were honored with awards and scholarships.
Former Colquitt County High School marketing instructor, Ron Lampman, was an additional honoree. An anonymous donor established a scholarship in Mr. Lampman’s memory.

  • Case for a flat tax

    Dear editor:
American pride and justice in our public revenue gathering service has been damaged beyond repair.

    Dear editor:
I would like to share a miracle God did in my life and in the life of my family via intercessory prayer.

  • dwain walden.tif Don’t forget about the camera crew

Sometimes I think I get way too critical of TV programming to actually enjoy a show. I know going in that even on reality shows, much of it has been staged. And on dramas, so much is predictable.
