Is it for real? Or just a seasonal marketing effort?

| — We hear a lot these days about the “Tea Party” movement. It resembles, in philospophy, another movement several years ago with the moniker “Contract With America.”

Movements come and go. They need names for marketing purposes. It’s hard to get people all riled up if there isn’t some kind of slogan that easy to remember.

Tea Party is supposed to be one of those grassroots things kind of like the original Tea Party at Boston Harbor. It’s about people demanding response from their government based on the groundswell of feelings from those who put them in office.

Of course a movement has to have more than a name. It has to have substance. There is a big question posed in the Tea Party movement. Is it truly groundswell or is it clever marketing by political strategists?

The proof of the pudding is said to be in the partaking of it.

Traditionally we see much political apathy in elections. Now given, there are bigger voter turnouts in some years than others but considering thatwe consider ourselves the showcase for democracy, even on our best turnout apathy could also be showcased.

If the Tea Party movement, or any other movement, is for real, then it shoul be revealed in voter turnouts across our land in local, state and national elections. Otherwise, it will amount to little more than seasonal sparring.

    Dear editor:
Wildlife rehabilitators, or rehabbers as they are known in the animal community, are very special people. They have acquired the knowledge and experience that is needed to work with injured and orphaned wildlife. Licensed by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, and if caring for federally protected species, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, a wildlife rehabilitator’s ultimate goal is to take an injured or orphaned animal, get it healthy and return it to its natural habitat.

Remember back in the early sixties when people were digging bomb shelters in fear of the “Big One” being dropped on us? I recall how an alarm would go off at school, and we would get under our desks. What a joke! Get under our desks when one entire wall was glass!

What words can be added to so many that have been said in prayer and praise for our Haley?  We have witnessed an outpouring of love and sacrifice for our families, and we truly cannot express our feelings of humility and gratitude.

  • What's at stake here?

    Dear editor
It looks like one of my worst fears is about to happen. With President Obama’s withdrawal of all American troops from Iraq it appears the democratic government we set up in Iraq is getting ready to come apart.  The Shiites and Sunnis are at each others throats and the Kurds and Turkey are already shooting at each other. Iran seems to be paused to take up the vacuum we will be left and obtain a nuclear weapon. In 2007 the Democrats were clamoring for President Bush to get our troops out of Iraq.
