Rant and Rave for 12/18/12

— — — —

An expense

“Adding bathrooms to the walking trail? Do you realize that this is an expense and our nation is in a severe economic state? Maybe you should walk closer to your house."

Security issue

“After the terrible events of Friday, December 14th, all anyone is talking about from the media is gun control. Do we really believe that crazies and criminals will abide by the law?  I mean this monster killed 26 innocent people!  I think we need to look at better security measures at our area schools.

I know this won't prevent all the shootings, but we have an obligation to protect our children!  Please relook at security.  I know of three schools which front doors are never locked. My son attends one of them.  May God Bless the families and the whole community of Newtown CT."

Ride a bus

“In response: The drivers I have spoken to have stated they stopped driving, not because of the pay but because of the spoiled, selfish, rotten, perfect children they have to carry. Most drive mainly for the health insurance. Kids today have no respect. Don’t agree? Ride a bus for a week."

Choices

“How did the ‘bad’ students become demotivated? Have you ever seen a demotivated 2 -year-old? All 2-year- olds are passionate about learning!

At some point, somebody turned that off. Maybe it was a parent or a teacher whose heavy discipline told the child that exploring would get them hurt.

It takes different styles for different people, and that's why we need choices."

Walking Trail

“Heart disease kills more people than thugs jumping out of bathrooms. The walking trail should be a comfortable place to get out and move around."

Can't lock the door

“I teach at one of our elementary schools. I cannot lock my classroom from the inside. We have never had keys. Most of our doors that open to the playground are always unlocked.

Anyone that wanted to, can enter this school. Dr. DePaul...please look into this, before something like the Connecticut tragedy happens here."

Matter of safety

“We should learn from what happened in Connecticut today. Colquitt County schools assume safety, when in reality they are an open target.

Take Willie J. Williams for instance. The side door that leads to the choir and band rooms is always open.

Someone could easily park in the back parking lot and walk right in without being noticed.

It's a concern that many people have, but now it is vital that we speak up about it.

My child deserves to be safe, and right now I don't think she is."

  • Our government meetings are indeed people’s business

In the past few days comments in the Rants and Raves column on this page have asked very pertinent questions relative to our involvement or lack thereof in the democratic-republic process.

I’ve often complained that instead of talking to a robot on the telephone, I would relish communication with a warm body.  Once I even spoke to a janitor who just happened to be passing by the ringing phone. He couldn’t help me with my issue, but it was comforting to know that not everyone in the building had been called in for an IRS audit.

  • Much appreciation

    Dear editor:
On Tuesday, May 14, many graduates were honored with awards and scholarships.
Former Colquitt County High School marketing instructor, Ron Lampman, was an additional honoree. An anonymous donor established a scholarship in Mr. Lampman’s memory.

  • Case for a flat tax

    Dear editor:
American pride and justice in our public revenue gathering service has been damaged beyond repair.

    Dear editor:
I would like to share a miracle God did in my life and in the life of my family via intercessory prayer.

  • dwain walden.tif Don’t forget about the camera crew

Sometimes I think I get way too critical of TV programming to actually enjoy a show. I know going in that even on reality shows, much of it has been staged. And on dramas, so much is predictable.
