Rant and Rave for 12/22/12

MOULTRIE — Internet scams

“I get all sorts of bogus offers on my emails. They are blatant scams. So why don’t law enforcement set up stings to bust some of these frauds?"

Mad men

“Let’s face it. There’s no absolute way to protect one’s self from terrorism. Mad and deranged people can deliver mayhem at some level no matter what precautions one takes. Of course there are some precautions we can take. I know of no reason why anyone should have a military-style assault rifle."

Your attention

“Security through obscurity is no security. Just because something becomes public knowledge doesn't make the school more of a target. A person who wants to commit a crime usually researches their target well in advance. They visit the scene to learn for themselves. Thankfully, someone spoke up. This got your attention, and you'll probably soon see those doors locked like they should have been to begin with."

The power of fear

“So we give teachers guns and lock up the schools. That'll make the crazies go shoot up other public places, right? Let's all live in fear. The boogey man is gonna get you!

"Like the other ranter said today, I don't think this is a real big deal, and I don't think these ideas for fixing it will work. The problem is our culture. If you give a weak person power through your fear, you're encouraging the problem."

Show of hands?

“So have you asked a teacher if he or she would like to be armed? And could they shoot another person? Could they even hit another person? I have had extensive training with handguns and what you see in the movies is not the way it really is. The mere noise from a Glock .45 firing is enough to make an unexperienced person close his eyes and miss a target by 10 feet. Shooting at a stationary target in a controlled situation doesn’t even come closed to shooting at a target that’s shooting back at you in a very hostile situation. Think it through."

Dangerous

“When school let out on Tuesday, a female in a white jeep wrangler whose tag was PMT9**8 (the other numbers were purposely left out) and a male in a burgundy truck whose tag was PBK7**4, were flying thru the parking lot of Zaxby’s (11:45am) like they were at the Daytona 500. Children please slow down before you hurt someone or worse kill yourself on the highway. Parents take note if this is your child. Oh by the way, I called 911 and gave them the tag numbers. Maybe they will be watching out for you next time."

Applause

“My sandwich at a local fast food restaurant was very good, but nothing to compare to the unexpected treat of hearing the CCHS Serenaders while I dined. Thank you Mr. Kern and students."

  • Great performance

    Dear Editor,
You don't have to live in New York, Paris or London to experience world-class cultural events. You can do that right here in Moultrie, Georgia.

  • Tribute to my dad

    Dear editor:
Growing up in South Georgia every little girl thinks of their daddy as their prince; I am no different. And I believe his years of sacrifice, dedication and unconditional love for me is a story worth telling.

  • dwain walden.tif Oh joy! The Turtle Man will return

Great news! The Turtle Man is coming back for another season on television!
And yes, I’m being a little facetious here. It’s a ridiculous show, but apparently it’s entertainment for some people.

  • The kind of stuff that happens in dictatorships

Distrust of government secrecy has been elevated to an exceptional level with the disclosure the Justice Department covertly examined two months of Associated Press phone records to determine who leaked details to the AP about a foiled terrorist plot.

  • dwain walden.tif And would you like fries with that?

Most of us have seen the Chick-fil-A signs that urge us to “eat more chicken.” So would you ever expect to see one that says, “eat more crickets?”

  • Something to enjoy

    Dear editor,
On Sunday I had the pleasure of witnessing an Atlanta Braves game up close and in person.  I have been to a Braves game before but every time always feels like the first.
