Local church deserves applause for shelter effort

Our opinion

Applause is due Greater Newton Grove Baptist Church for opening up its doors as a shelter for those in need.

It first began this ministry a few weeks ago when the area was gripped by record cold weather. It was the only immediate shelter in our community available for the homeless or for those without heat on those days. And now it has announced that it will make the shelter permanent.

This church is appealing to various agencies and the public to help support their efforts as a shelter. Such is a good cause and we would encourage anyone looking for a charitable cause to consider this project.

The Rev. Cornelius Ponder also said in announcing the church’s intentions, that the shelter could also offer a place for those without a permanent residence to clean up, shower and shave and also put them on the path toward getting a General Educational Development certificate, a job or a driver’s license.

Again, let us applaud this church for embracing such ideals and specifically for uplifting the Biblical concept of “brother’s keeper.”
