Rant and Rave for 01/01/13

MOULTRIE — Violent culture

“I was just observing some of the movies and video games being promoted on television. It seems the majority of them are built around very violent themes. Carnage everywhere. So given that young children see so much of this, do we not see a connection between that environment and their behavior? We had better start looking at this more intently and try to address it in some reasonable fashion."

Poor analogy

“After reading many rants and raves about the elementary school massacre, it seems we have much reaction as to what should or should not be done. Someone has even compared these deaths of these children to deaths from DUIs, obesity, etc. and attempted to diminish these concerns for the tragedy at Sandy Hook school. I would remind that person that those parents did not bury statistics. They buried their babies. And if there was ever a case for using poor analogy, you chose the worst."

Targeted

“Why are certain subgroups targeted for condemned homes in Doerun?

"Many homeowners have been threatened to have their homes condemned due to the condition of their homes. The community is concern about the owner of "Run Down" homes on Robinson Street in Doerun. Why isn't the owner of those homes held accountable for such an environment?"

Whom to blame

“To ‘upset’ from 12-29-12, if blame needs to be placed on the demise of the puppies during the storm, then blame the owner. If we ALL took responsibility for our pets then we would not need a Humane Society."

Give me a break!

“I have a concealed permit am not a member of the NRA and never will be. It is very idiotic to claim assault rifles are for hunting as the NRA claims. No place outside law enforcement and military for such weapons. AK-47s to kill deer... give me a break!"

About guns

“I have no problem disagreeing with people. It’s only the rhetoric that bores me. I understand why people are opposed to gun regulation. I just think it’s a time for listening and reevaluating one's values.

"Believe me, if we were having this conversation 10 years ago I'd be waving my ‘don't tread on me flag’ and shooting guns in the air. I once believed that there should be zero gun regulation as a matter of principle. I had less faith in government and a ton of faith in people.

"Perhaps where we're different now is that I have much less faith in people having personal responsibility and am perhaps hoping on a prayer that our government can make up for it."

Now you see?

“This fiscal cliff mess ... now can you see why we need term limits? We have proof that longevity does not produce leadership."

  • Our government meetings are indeed people’s business

In the past few days comments in the Rants and Raves column on this page have asked very pertinent questions relative to our involvement or lack thereof in the democratic-republic process.

I’ve often complained that instead of talking to a robot on the telephone, I would relish communication with a warm body.  Once I even spoke to a janitor who just happened to be passing by the ringing phone. He couldn’t help me with my issue, but it was comforting to know that not everyone in the building had been called in for an IRS audit.

  • Much appreciation

    Dear editor:
On Tuesday, May 14, many graduates were honored with awards and scholarships.
Former Colquitt County High School marketing instructor, Ron Lampman, was an additional honoree. An anonymous donor established a scholarship in Mr. Lampman’s memory.

  • Case for a flat tax

    Dear editor:
American pride and justice in our public revenue gathering service has been damaged beyond repair.

  • dwain walden.tif Don’t forget about the camera crew

Sometimes I think I get way too critical of TV programming to actually enjoy a show. I know going in that even on reality shows, much of it has been staged. And on dramas, so much is predictable.
