Rant and Rave for July 2

Thanks

“I just want to thank The Moultrie Observer for an opinion page that gives us all a chance to speak up. Some I agree with and some I don’t, but more importantly I have an opportunity to public forum. Strangely, I’ve heard some people call this page a liberal page. Others say it is conservative. Guess what, I see both leanings represented here. The Simon fellow as well as Froma Harrop lean toward being liberal while Buchanan and Cal Thomas are staunch conservatives. Again, thanks for a diversity of opinions. I haven’t been in the community very many years, but I enjoy my newspaper."

Minorities

“I agree that there should be more minorities associated with not only CA Gray but with the entire school system. We have a good mix of African American and caucasian teachers in our school system.

"A Hispanic or Puerto Rican teacher role model would be nice to see. Also in our system men are a minority, there are a number of female teachers but not male. But people must also remember you can only hire a person if they apply and unfortunately the applications of minority teachers are not plentiful. I would rather hire someone because they are extremely qualified for the position instead of the color of their skin. I do believe that is called reverse discrimination."

Summer feeding

“Concerning the summer feeding program: The school nutrition director said, ‘It's not just handing out free food. She is right. It is handing out food paid for by those of us who work and pay taxes. I have looked back through my college economics textbook and cannot find a single place where it says that giving something away in an organized manner is not giving it away!

"She said, ‘If there's a child that's hungry, we want to feed them.’ Why, then, are the only selected feeding sites in the city of Moultrie? Do not children in other parts of the county get hungry? Isn't our school system county wide? Who is paying for the 30 workers in the program? If it is such a great and free program, why do only 55 of the state's 180 school systems participate? We deserve some answers!"

Speeders

“To speeders on Cherokee Drive at Indian Lake ...Your tag numbers are being turned in to authorities. Now we will see if you slow down a little. The speed limit is 25 not 55!"

No role model

“Michael Jackson was a very talented and popular artist, and I enjoyed listening to his music growing up. Let's face it, the guy was a freak and definitely not a role model."

Cutting limbs

“I think if we would adopt the practice of cutting off limbs of criminals we might see a reduction in crime."

  • We better wake up

    Dear editor:
Have our GOP representatives gone to sleep or are they refusing to act for the people they are supposed to represent? The Obama administration has contracted a Spanish company called SCYTAL, to tabulate the 2012 November presidential election.

  • Dwain Walden.jpg May God bless my Uncle Henry

My uncle once noted on his return from a fishing trip that he caught so many fish he couldn’t put them all in one pile.
That’s how I feel trying to keep up with all the causes and organizations that either require support groups or else they comprise support groups.

  • A kind humanity

    Dear editor:
Humanity. One word. That word can translate into many other words. Some would say humanity is dark, greedy and bent on world domination. Others may say humanity is sweet, kind and caring. I myself witnessed a small part of a loving, caring humanity the other day.

  • Why it's a bad tax

    Dear editor:
In regards to the Transportation TSplost Tax:  The statement, “Economic development suffers if we don’t pass this tax” is not a valid statement, because Georgia has always been behind the 8 ball in regards to transportation, but yet look at the growth we have experienced; being behind in transportation didn't hinder economic growth. Georgia now ranks 11th in the country as of 2010 and this occurred mostly since 1995. The economic vitality of Georgia is alive and well considering the slump the country is in.

  • I am saddened

    Dear editor:
A couple of weeks ago, I attended Field Day at Sunset Elementary where my oldest daughter attends the Pre-K program. I was deeply saddened to hear that Mrs. Vicky Watson will be retiring this year.

Poll

If the vote were held today, would you support the Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax?

Yes. We need these projects, and this is the only way we can pay for them.
No. We don't need any more taxes.
No. The process is undemocratic and wrong.
