Rants and Raves for July 24

MOULTRIE — History

“If you know your history, you will know that private companies have used prison, ahem...slave, labor in the past. It was called convict leasing but it was simply slavery by another name (See Douglas Blackmon's book by the same name). It led to corruption because business owners got free labor so they paid law enforcement under the table to arrest people for menial "crimes" and kept the convicts imprisoned indefinitely.

Tea partiers

“Boy, the Tea Partiers really showed their 'true color' regarding Mrs. Sherrod, and were completely unrepentant about it, also!

Complaint

“We spent 6 hours Wednesday night in Colquitt Regional Medical Center's ER waiting room with a very sick niece visiting from Texas. When we finally got to see a doctor, he said she wasn't bleeding, could breathe, and sent her back to camp. We found out the next day from a ‘real doctor’ she was dangerously ill. I have never experienced such grossly negligent medical care.

Prisoners

“I don’t think prisoners should do anything but sit in jail and rot, the county uses them on work details for cheap labor. I know plenty of people that would work the roads, pick up trash or clean buildings that got laid off in the past year.  Stop yelling about Hispanics taking American jobs, try looking in your own back yard. Our own government is the one who taking away American jobs.

Addiction

“What amazes me about today's society is how dependent, excuse me, I meant to say addicted we have become with cell phones. It has become ridiculous!! You see people talking while driving, parking, walking into a store, while shopping, while going through the check out, while loading the car, at the kids ball games, while working, while eating in a restaurant, while going into a restroom and even during the restroom visit (eeww).

I hate talking on the phone with someone and hear the toilet flush. That is a visual no one needs. I guess what I am saying is stop, look and listen to the life going on around you. You could miss seeing something spectacular!

Observation

“To the ranter about volunteer firefighters - apparently you didn't see that fire was already out. It looks as though the house fire was out and they were hitting some hot spots. It is safe to fight hot spots without gear. Each department does training on how to remain safe.

Question

“Why haven’t Chet Powell’s lawyers allowed him to tell his side of the story?

    Dear editor:
Wildlife rehabilitators, or rehabbers as they are known in the animal community, are very special people. They have acquired the knowledge and experience that is needed to work with injured and orphaned wildlife. Licensed by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, and if caring for federally protected species, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, a wildlife rehabilitator’s ultimate goal is to take an injured or orphaned animal, get it healthy and return it to its natural habitat.

  • Dwain Walden.jpg The sky is falling! The sky is falling!

Remember back in the early sixties when people were digging bomb shelters in fear of the “Big One” being dropped on us? I recall how an alarm would go off at school, and we would get under our desks. What a joke! Get under our desks when one entire wall was glass!

    Dear editor:
What words can be added to so many that have been said in prayer and praise for our Haley?  We have witnessed an outpouring of love and sacrifice for our families, and we truly cannot express our feelings of humility and gratitude.

  • Were we really shocked by the half-time cheap shot?

There’s an old saying, “Go to bed with dogs, wake up with fleas.”

    Dear editor:
When the Declaration of Independence was signed, we as a Country, The United States of America, were declaring our Freedom and Liberty.

  • What's at stake here?

    Dear editor
It looks like one of my worst fears is about to happen. With President Obama’s withdrawal of all American troops from Iraq it appears the democratic government we set up in Iraq is getting ready to come apart.  The Shiites and Sunnis are at each others throats and the Kurds and Turkey are already shooting at each other. Iran seems to be paused to take up the vacuum we will be left and obtain a nuclear weapon. In 2007 the Democrats were clamoring for President Bush to get our troops out of Iraq.

Should candidates for county positions have to run for a party's nomination?

No. Political parties are meaningless at this level.
Yes. It helps voters know where they stand on issues.
