Crash injures woman, 3 kids

MOULTRIE — A 20-year-old woman injured in a Sunday evening wreck remained hospitalized on Tuesday, while the driver accused of causing the accident is charged with driving while taking morphine.

Lucia Crisostomo was in good condition in Colquitt Regional Medical Center on Tuesday, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Crisostomo, whose leg was broken in the collision on Georgia Highway 111, was the most seriously injured, according to the Georgia State Patrol. Crisostomo was a passenger in the front seat, the area of the vehicle which was struck.

The accident could have been much worse as that vehicle also carried three children ages 2 through 7.

Prior to the crash, a Georgia State Patrol trooper was headed toward the area searching for a weaving driver, a patrol spokesman said. Colquitt County’s 911 system received multiple calls of an impaired driver.

Agency reports said that Ronald Byron Bentley, 50, of Moultrie, driving a Ford Ranger, was traveling south at about 7 p.m. on Highway 111 near the intersection of Circle Road when his vehicle crossed the center line.

Juan Sanchez, 34, the driver of a Chevrolet Suburban headed north, tried to avoid a collision but was not able to get out of the path of the truck. Sanchez and his four passengers had Oregon identification but the Suburban was registered in Colquitt County.

Bentley, who was under the influence of prescribed morphine, told the trooper that he was going in and out of consciousness before the wreck, the agency spokesman said. Colquitt County authorities were alerted by several people calling in reports of a reckless driver on the roadway.

Bentley was charged with driving under the influence of drugs and improper lane change, the spokesman said.

Sanchez was treated at Colquitt Regional and released as were passengers Daniel Crisostomo, 2, Jose Crisostomo, 7, and 3-year-old Ivan Sanchez.

The children were all in car or booster seats.
