MOULTRIE —
Thievery was down substantially from last weekend’s $35,000 haul. But break-ins at three commercial ice machines were among thefts over the weekend in Colquitt County that totaled more than 14,500.
A Twice the Ice machine at 1601 Camilla Highway was damaged on two occasions over the weekend, the Moultrie Police Department said.
In the first incident, Stephen Sanders reported on Friday that damage of $5,000 to the machine.
A door of the unit was torn off the hinges, control cabinet wiring was damaged and an unknown amount of money was taken.
On Saturday, Sanders reported that the door latch and bill acceptor were damaged, with damage estimated at $900. In that incident nothing appeared to be missing.
On Friday, Scott Penuel of Moultrie reported that the door of a Twice the Ice machine at 502 Main St. was pried open. About $200 in coins and bills were taken.
And on Saturday Penuel reported that the business again was entered, with $20 taken.
In other thefts
• Dollar General, 1908 First Ave. S.E., reported Sunday that a shoplifter stole $44 worth of hygiene items and other items.
• Courtney Slaughter, 800 block Fourth Street Northwest, reported Saturday the theft of a vehicle tag from a 2002 Chevrolet Malibu.
• Circle N Petro, 1607 Camilla Hwy., reported Sunday that a shoplifter concealed two Red Bull drinks and a container of biscuits in his pants.
• Waffle House, 1900 First Ave. S.E., reported Sunday that five women ate meals at the restaurant and left without paying the $35 tab.
• Daniel Williams and Clarence Roberts, both of Moultrie, reported Saturday the theft of two Smith and Wesson .40-caliber pistols from a vehicle parked in the 300 block of Eighth Street Southwest.
• Dollar General, 1908 First Ave. S.E., reported Saturday that a shoplifter stole a pair of shoes valued at $8.
• Betty R. Gay, of Moultrie, reported Saturday that an air conditioning unit was stolen from a rental property in the 700 block of 13th Street Southwest.
• Cecil White, 700 block Fourth Avenue Southwest, reported Saturday the theft of a license plate from a 1992 Mercury Grand Marquise.
• Kekishia Kinsey, 900 block Fourth Avenue Southwest, reported Saturday the theft of a 32-inch flat screen television with DVD player.
• Angela Stevens, 500 block Oak Circle, reported Friday the theft of a 27-inch Magnavox television, Dell computer, RCA stereo, XBox, Sony Playstation and cable equipment.
• Juanita Pullen, of Tallahassee, Fla., reported Friday that after her husband used a charge card at a gas station in Moultrie charges of $120 were added to the card.
• Barbara Oxley, 100 block First Street Southwest, reported Friday that some of her checks were used to make purchases totaling $3,543 in Atlanta.
• James Veal, first block Norman Street, reported Friday that he paid for a trailer from a Hahira man and later learned the sale was a scam.
Police reports did not state how much money Veal paid in the transaction.
• Randall Freeman, of Moultrie, reported Friday that he paid by Western Union for a trailer from a Hahira man and later learned the sale was a scam.
Police reports did not give the amount paid by Freeman.
• Henry Lee, 600 block Oak Circle, reported Friday finding a golf cart and other items near his residence.
Officers discovered that the red golf cart that was reported missing from Colquitt County High School.
The high school reported that a set of bolt cutters, a chain saw and hedger were missing from the vehicle. Two bicycles found near where the area from which the golf cart was stolen were taken as evidence.
• Dollar General, 601 First Ave. S.E., reported that a shoplifter stole a pack of underwear.
• Mary Ann Tillman, 1700 block Southland Villas, reported Sunday the theft of a pair of fog lights from a 2009 Lincoln MKS.
• Personal Finance Services, 301 First St. S.E., reported July 19 the theft of a 32-inch Philips television and an unknown amount of money.
• Jimmy Allen, 200 block N. McNaughton Blvd., reported Sunday the theft of two rifles from a storage unit.

• Randall Coots, 1500 block 12th Court Southeast, reported Sunday the theft of a Wii game system and remote controls, PS2 game system and remote controls, PS2 video games and RCA console television.
• James Powell, 100 block Brandi Drive, reported Saturday the theft of a deep tool box with assorted tools and a Dodge wheel.
• Elmer Purvis, 300 block Pine Valley Circle, Adel, reported Friday the theft of a dishwasher, shower and sink, seven light switch and outlet covers, three smoke detectors and shower doors from a mobile home in the 200 block of Saline Drive.
• Betty Sue Ball, 200 block Indian Lake Drive, Norman Park, reported Friday the theft of a bicycle.
• Gail Dampier, 800 block W.E. Hart Road, reported Friday the theft of a 500-gallon propane tank from the 400 block of Hempstead Church Road.
• Jennifer Thomason, 800 block Doc Darbyshire Road, reported Friday that two men stole a go-cart from her residence.
An officer responding to a call of a vehicle in the ditch in the 200 block of East Gate Drive found a Ford Ranger driven by Glen Lashley.
Thomason told the officer she went to Lashley’s residence to confront him about the theft, and when he left in the pickup truck she chased him until he ran into the ditch.
Lashley and a 16-year-old passenger were detained for questioning in the incident, and told officers that Thomason removed a pair of boots from Lashley’s truck.
No charges were made.
• Marsha Marshall, 300 block Dunn Road, reported Saturday the theft of a wall plaque, porcelain jewelry box, hoop earrings and pendant with chain.
Marshall told the officer she suspects a part-time roommate stole the items.
• Donald Bivins, 100 block 30th Avenue Northeast, reported Friday the theft of a 40-gallon electric water heater.

Wayne Littles: From Moultrie to the moon shot … and beyond
The year J. Wayne Littles graduated from Moultrie High School — 1957 — Russia launched the world’s first man-made satellite, Sputnik 1. The Space Race was on, and America was losing.
Five years later, with a mechanical engineering degree from Georgia Tech in his hand, Littles joined the competition. Over the next half-century, the Moultrie native helped the United States put a man on the moon, develop a reusable space shuttle and establish a space station.
