MOULTRIE —
A high-speed chase that originated Monday night in Berlin ended in Moultrie with the driver crashing into a parked car and being chased down by officers.
Paul Lamont Merritt, 1306 Leone Ave., Valdosta, was charged in Moultrie with reckless driving and failure to maintain lane. Moultrie police said that Berlin will file other charges that include driving under the influence.
It was not known Tuesday why the Berlin Police Department initiated the chase or what additional charges he will face there. The Observer could not get an answer Tuesday afternoon at Berlin City Hall or the police department.
Moultrie police joined the vehicle pursuit for a short distance and then when Merritt got out after the wreck they chased him along with the Berlin officer, Moultrie Police Cmdr. Seth Walters said.
Police reports said that at about 10:58 p.m. Merritt, driving a 2007 Dodge Charger, struck a 2002 Chevrolet Impala parked at the intersection of Ninth Avenue and 11th Street Southeast. The crash occurred when Merritt tried to turn from 11th Street onto Ninth Avenue and was driving too fast to make the turn.
Merritt’s car had extensive damage, police said, and he had minor cuts and scrapes. The other car had moderate damage.
