The Wildlife Society at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College received the 2012 Southeastern Section of the Wildlife Society Student Chapter of the Year award at the recent Southeastern Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies Conference in Hot Springs, Ark.
In the six years of the student chapter’s existence, this is the second time ABAC has received this award. The students were evaluated on the number and quality of their annual activities, with an emphasis on activities that foster professionalism and leadership, that benefit resource conservation, and that involve community service through activities encompassing wildlife and conservation education.
“We’re glad that someone else is recognizing all the hard work our students put in, and it helps get ABAC’s name out,” said William Moore, associate professor of wildlife and co-advisor of the forestry and wildlife club’s student chapter.
ABAC beat out university-level competition including the University of Georgia, the University of Tennessee, Auburn University, Clemson University, Louisiana State University, North Carolina State University, Virginia Tech and 19 other student chapters within the region.
“It is really an impressive accomplishment considering we have such a large number of big competitors, not to mention receiving the award for a second time,” Moore said.
Other Wildlife Society co-advisors are Doug Waid, professor of wildlife and forestry; and Jay Scott, assistant professor of wildlife.
The ABAC Society will continue its lineup of award-winning projects and activities with the first ever Wildlife Supper in April and its annual involvement with the making of duck boxes for the Department of Natural Resources.
