MOULTRIE —
A burglary suspect was apprehended after he led law enforcement on a foot chase through a wooded area off of Industrial Drive Wednesday afternoon.
Curley Johnson Jr., 34, of 905 Eighth Ave. S.E., was charged with burglary and obstruction. Additional charges may be added pending an ongoing investigation.
Colquitt County Sheriff’s Investigator Sgt. Shawn Bostick said a deputy was called to 114 Lindale Ave. at 1:05 p.m. Wednesday about an alarm. A deputy and a captain arrived about the same time, and the captain saw a black male, later identified as Johnson, running behind the house.
Deputies and investigators arrived at the scene, and Bostick said a neighbor reported seeing a black male running between houses and into the woods. Officers formed a perimeter around the woods on Industrial Drive, Lindale Avenue, Pineview Avenue and Holly Street. Deputies requested the assistance of a Moultrie Police K-9 unit to help track down Johnson.
Moultrie Police Cpl. Daniel Lindsay arrived with his K-9, Hugo, and Hugo found a trail on Lindale Avenue and followed it into the woods. Hugo chased down Johnson and caught up to him. After a struggle, deputies and investigators placed Johnson under arrest in the woods near Industrial Drive, Bostick said.
A search of Johnson allegedly found items that linked him to the burglary on Lindale Avenue, and he was taken to Colquitt County Jail.
Deputy Jason Harrod, who was the first deputy at the scene, said he arrived and was told Johnson had run into the woods behind the house on Lindale Avenue. While he did not see Johnson, Harrod found five long guns, shotguns and rifles, that were behind a shed and left next to a bicycle, believed to be Johnson’s bicycle. The guns were recovered and returned to the homeowners, who told investigators this was the second time the house had been broken into within the last two weeks, but nothing was stolen in the previous break-in.
