Gabon ambassador tours South Georgia ag sites

MOULTRIE — The Gabonese ambassador to the United States toured agricultural sites in South Georgia Thursday, including the Sunbelt Expo in Moultrie and Southern Valley Fruits and Vegetables in Norman Park..

Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black hosted the two-day tour for Ambassador Michael Moussa-Adamo.

According to an e-mail from the Georgia Department of Agriculture, the purpose of the tour was “to introduce the ambassador to Georgia agriculture and commodities so that our two countries can work together.”

“Gabon currently imports all of their food and this may be an opportunity to enhance Georgia exports,” said Expo Director Chip Blalock, “but the bigger picture is to educate them on growing their own food and selling them inputs.”

The tour kicked off Thursday morning at the Sunbelt Expo grounds where UGA specialists discussed cotton, peanuts, corn, soybeans, forages and irrigation systems.

After Southern Valley, the tour visited Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and the University of Georgia Tifton Campus/Coastal Plain Experiment Station, both in Tifton. After Tifton, the itinerary featured the Wayne Farms poultry processing facility in Pendergrass.
