Deputies charge Berlin man in domestic incident

Staff Reports

BERLIN — A Berlin man was apprehended early Tuesday morning after he allegedly forced his way into a house and assaulted a woman Monday night.

Robert Olliff, 29, of 656 Chapman Road in Berlin, was charged with simple assault (family violence), interfering with a 911 call and three counts of cruelty to children (third degree).

A Colquitt County sheriff’s deputy was called to a house on Chapman Road in Berlin about 9:40 p.m. Monday about a domestic dispute. As the deputy arrived, Olliff allegedly fled the scene by climbing out of a window.

The deputy spoke with Melanie Miller, who stated she and Olliff got into a verbal argument and he allegedly began pushing her around the house. She said she called 911 and was speaking with a dispatcher, but Olliff allegedly pushed her away, grabbed the phone from her and disconnected the call.

Miller stated Olliff was her live-in boyfriend, and the alleged incident took place in front of three children, between the ages of 6 and 11 years old. Other deputies came to the scene and began searching for Olliff, but he was not located and deputies left the scene.

Three deputies went back to the house about 4:20 a.m. Tuesday in a second attempt to locate Olliff. A deputy knocked on the door after allegedly hearing Olliff inside the house and seeing him inside through a window. He did open the door, and deputies noted he was cold, had grass on his head and a leaf in his hair, which led deputies to believe he had been hiding in the woods.

After he opened the door, Olliff was placed under arrest and was taken to Colquitt County Jail.
