KINSTON, N.C. —
A former Berlin police officer was charged last week in the robbery of a North Carolina store.
Matthew Webb, 31, now of Kinston, N.C., was charged Aug. 17 in connection with the armed robbery of a Family Dollar Store in nearby Goldsboro, N.C., according to ENCToday.com, the website of a chain of newspapers in eastern North Carolina.
Webb formerly worked for six police departments in South Georgia, the Georgia Police Officers Standards and Training Council told ENCToday.com. In addition to the Berlin PD, he worked three separate times for the Morven Police Department, twice for the Meigs PD, and once each for the Barwick PD, Brooks County Sheriff’s Office and Pelham PD. He became a police officer in 2000 and was terminated by the Pelham PD in November 2007 for “violating department rules and insubordination,” the website reported.
The Police Officers Standards and Training Council put Webb on probation in 2009 due to his firing in Pelham, ENCToday reported, and it planned to revoke his law enforcement certification this week due to his arrest.
Goldsboro, N.C., police told the website that Webb robbed the store at gunpoint about 11:20 a.m., but did not assault or injure the two employees or six customers in the store. He fled in a red Jeep Wrangler, police said.
A surveillance helicopter with the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office spotted the vehicle and kept it in sight until ground units could pull it over, police said.
A handgun was found in the vehicle, police said. Webb was jailed on a $100,000 bond.
North Carolina police had encountered Webb about three weeks earlier, accoding to WITN.com, the website of a regional TV station, but on July 22 Webb was the complainant, not the suspect.
WITN.com said Kinston police told them two men broke into Webb’s house that day. He grabbed up a gun and fired at the burglars and they fled. They are still at large, a police spokesman said last week.
