Law enforcement officers responded to two separate three-vehicle accidents recently. Two people were taken to Colquitt Regional Medical Center for minor injuries.
A Georgia State Patrol (GSP) trooper was called to the intersection of Highway 133 and Old Albany Road about 7 p.m. Sunday about an accident. Upon arriving at the scene, the trooper found a GMC Yukon, driven by a 16-year-old boy, a semi truck, driven by Jerry Sanders, 52, of Valdosta, and a Mercedes E300, driven by Sunny Cochran, 40, of Sale City, were all severely damaged.
The 16-year-old told the trooper he was driving the Yukon on Old Albany Road approaching the intersection with Highway 133 when his Apple iPod fell. He reached down to get it and did not see a stop sign at the intersection.
When the Yukon entered the intersection, it hit the semi truck, which was driving north on Highway 133, in the passenger side. Following the impact, the semi went into the southbound lane and hit the Mercedes, which was driving south on Highway 133. Following impact, the semi went off the shoulder and hit guy wires and a utility pole, and the Mercedes rotated clockwise but remained on the road.
There were no major injuries to any of the drivers from the collision, and only Cochran was admitted to Colquitt Regional following the accident. A hospital spokesperson said she was treated for her injuries and released Sunday. All three were wearing seatbelts at the time of the collision.
In addition to the trooper, the Moultrie Fire Department and members of the Northside Volunteer Fire Department were also at the scene.
The teen-ager was charged with failure to stop at a stop sign.
In a second accident, a Moultrie police officer was called to a three-vehicle collision at the South Veterans Parkway and Park Avenue intersection about 4:20 p.m. Tuesday. The officer spoke with Howard Barnes, of 405 Yogi Bear Road in Norman Park, who stated he was driving a Chrysler Town and Country van on Park Avenue and entered the intersection with South Veterans Parkway.
As the van crossed over into the northbound lanes of South Veterans Parkway, a Ford Ranger, driven by Elijah Williams, of 926 Roberts Road, was on South Veterans Parkway and also entered the intersection, and the two vehicles collided.
Following the collision, the Ranger was pushed into a Ford Explorer, driven by Rickey Smith, of 413 31st St. S.E., who was waiting to turn north onto South Veterans Parkway. The Ranger rolled onto its side following the initial impact, and Williams was taken to Colquitt Regional with injuries. A hospital spokesperson said he was treated and released Tuesday.
Barnes was cited for failure to yield the right of way.
