Tax bill points to fraud

MOULTRIE — A Moultrie man whose Social Security number was used by another discovered the identify theft when he received a tax notice stating he owed more than $13,000 in federal taxes.

Jose Gomez, 100 block Eighth Street Southeast, reported to the Moultrie Police Department that information sent by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service indicated that the person who used his information worked several jobs in Georgia and other states. The person used Gomez’s Social Security card while employed.

The IRS notice said that Gomez owed $13,157 in back taxes, police reports said.

In other fraud:

• Paula Elizabeth Tillery, Tifton, reported Monday that personal checks stolen in Tift County were passed in Moultrie.

Tillery told the officer that checks for $1,100 and $1,500 were passed at Ameris Bank on Friday and Tuesday.



Thefts

• Ottis Willis Lewis III, Moultrie, reported Tuesday the theft of a 1993 Mercury Sable parked in the 10th block of West Central Avenue.

Lewis also reported that his cell phone was in the car at the time of the theft. The vehicle belongs to Jean and Lamar Baily of Ocilla.

• Beno Billingsly, 600 block Second Street Northwest, reported Tuesday that several drawers in his residence were searched during a burglary attempt.

Billingsly told the officer that nothing seemed to be missing and that no damage was done to the residence during entry.

• Ulysses Lane, Moultrie, reported Tuesday the theft of a Mossburg 12-gauge pump shotgun, Remington 16-gauge auto shotgun, Zebco rod and fishing pole.

The items were stolen from a storage unit in the 200 block of North McNaughton Blvd. rented by Lane.

• Murphy’s Express, 505 Veterans Parkway North, reported Tuesday that a shoplifter stole beer from the store.

Police arrested Jose J. Nunez nearby after Nunez admitted taking the beer, police reports said.

Nunez, 51, Halls Trail Road, was charged with theft by shoplifting.



Trespassing

• Mason Callahan, Moultrie, reported Tuesday that a male acquaintance pushed his way into a friend’s residence in the 700 block of Second Avenue Southeast while armed with a pistol.

Callahan told police that the man was looking for his estranged wife. The man got a glass of water in the kitchen, then came back into the room and used vulgar language and demanded to know the whereabouts of the woman.



Property damage

• Zackery Everett Griffin, Moultrie, reported Monday that the driver of a white Buick left the scene of an accident in a parking lot at 2 Hospital Park.

Griffin told the officer that he backed his 2009 Austin Mini Cooper into the other vehicle, and when he got out to discuss the accident the other driver drove away.

• Kreshonda Davis, 900 block Third St. S.E., reported Tuesday that a panel was kicked out of the door of her residence in an apparent break-in attempt.

• Kenyetta Jackson, 400 block 30th Street Southeast, reported Tuesday that a 1999 Honda Accord was scratched while parked in the 500 block of 27th Street Southeast.

• Classie Sailor, 200 block Dorothy Street, reported Tuesday that a sliding glass door at her residence was broken.

Sailor told the officer that boxes inside the residence had been opened but that nothing appeared to be missing.



Drugs seized

• Officers confiscated Tuesday three small bags and a larger bag containing suspected marijuana while investigating reports of trespassers at an abandoned house at the intersection of First Avenue Southwest and Ninth Street.

Officers saw two men under the carport of the house, but after they noticed that police were in the area they walked across the street. An officer found plastic bags containing the suspected marijuana, but by that time the men had left the area.

Thefts

• Ronald Davis, 100 block Deer Run, reported Tuesday the theft of household belongings from a residence in the 3500 block of Ga. Hwy. 133 N.

• Andy Shepard, 800 block Doc Darbyshire Road, reported Tuesday the theft of an EZ Go golf cart.

• Denny Sellers, 100 block Dalton Gay Road, reported Tuesday the theft of a window air conditioner and mahogany lamp stand from a residence in the 6400 block of Ga. Hwy. 37 W.



Assaults

• Cynthia Surlus, 100 block Shady Grove Road, reported Tuesday that a male relative hit her in the chest after he returned home intoxicated.

• Vicky Green, 500 block Cook Road, reported Tuesday that a male relative pushed her husband, Clarence Green, hit the door of their mobile home several times and rammed his head into the outside of the door.



Fraud

• Terrance J. Conner, 100 block Sam Sells Road, Doerun, reported Tuesday that a female acquaintance has written checks totaling $1,345 on a closed bank account.

  • Drug charge added when police arrest theft suspect

    A Meigs man charged with theft faces additional charges as suspected marijuana was found on him at the time of his arrest, Moultrie Police Department reports said.

  • CORRECTION: DUI charge

    In a Jan. 28 report, The Observer said Ronald Craig Bass, 50, 4411 Dunn Road, Hartsfield, was charged Jan. 26 with driving under the influence, open container violation and probation violation in connection with a minor wreck on Camilla Highway. Excluding the probation violation charge, that information came from a Moultrie police report of a November 2001 incident.
    Bass was charged with probation violation Thursday because all the penalties from the 2001 incident had not been paid. He paid the remaining penalties following his arrest, according to a Moultrie police report.
    The Observer regrets the error.
