The Moultrie YMCA has opened an outdoor course designed to challenge groups as they develop teamwork and communications skills.
On Saturday, Nov. 12, representatives from the Waldo DeLoache Charitable Trust and Southwest Georgia Bank gathered with Moultrie YMCA board members and staff to unveiled the first phase of the Y’s Adventure Course. The Adventure Course, built by Alpine Towers International, includes a series of ten low elements and a dual zip line tree house.
In 2003, Deen Day Sanders donated 25 acres of wooded property to the Moultrie YMCA. The YMCA Board of Directors recognized Sanders’ desire to keep the land close to its natural state.
“The vision for this Adventure Course is that it be a place for families to come and enjoy an outdoor destination, without having to leave our community,” said Greg Coop, Moultrie YMCA CEO. “Families and groups are able to come to the Moultrie YMCA now to grow stronger through team building and communication, challenging by choice.”
Earlier this year, the YMCA received a grant from the Waldo DeLoache Charitable Trust, managed by Southwest Georgia Bank, to build an outdoor adventure course on the property. This course would include low elements for teambuilding and training sessions and high elements, including dual zip lines, to create a component of outdoor adventure not currently found in Colquitt County. Children, teens and adults living in Moultrie and surrounding areas are just a few that will benefit from the experience of this course, according to the YMCA.
“Many thanks go to Mrs. Deen Day Sanders, the City of Moultrie for providing poles and mulch, Moultrie Police Department and Chief [Frank] Lang, neighbors of the Moultrie YMCA, and Moultrie YMCA directors and staff for all of their hard work in getting this project up and running. Tim Withrow and the maintenance crew did an outstanding job,” said Coop.
The YMCA has 450 children enrolled in after-school care; all will have an opportunity to participate. The course will be accessible for corporate and church groups, schools and child care facilities for communication, teamwork and character building initiatives. The YMCA expects more than 1,000 youth and adults will use the course throughout a calendar year. Through various challenges, participants will achieve higher self-esteem, improved problem solving skills, and have a greater respect for teamwork, the Y said.
In early 2012, construction of Phase II of the Adventure Course will begin. This phase will include a 50-foot climbing tower.
