Two injured in downtown accident

MOULTRIE — A two-car accident Thursday morning sent one driver and a passenger to Colquitt Regional Medical Center and the other driver to Colquitt County Jail.

Nadine Bembery, of 213 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, and Keisa Nowell, 33, of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, were taken to Colquitt Regional with injuries from the collision. A hospital spokesperson said both were treated for their injuries and released Thursday.

A Cadillac Deville, driven by Bembery, was pulling out of a parking space on First Avenue Southeast at 10:49 a.m. Thursday. She told a Moultrie police officer she believed she had the right of way because traffic at a nearby intersection was stopped for a red light.

As the Deville was backing out, a Ford Contour, allegedly driven by Erica Mundo, 28, of 283 Honey Bear Road in Norman Park, turned onto First Avenue Southeast from South Main Street. She stated the Deville backed into the road at a high rate of speed, and the vehicles collided with each other.

Bembery and a passenger in the Deville, Nowell, complained of injuries and were taken to Colquitt Regional by Colquitt County EMS. The officer discovered Mundo was allegedly driving without a valid license, and she was placed under arrest on that charge and taken to Colquitt County Jail. Police indicated it was her third offense of driving without a license.

The officer also found another passenger in the Deville was not properly secured at the time of the collision, but the child was not injured. Bembery was cited for a child restraint violation.
