• A reader writes: "The Tax Commissioner recently sent out a notice with the tax bills implying that the county had no choice but to include a $200-300 tax hike resulting from the loss of homeowners' tax relief grant.

That is disingenuous. I know for a fact that much smaller communities, including Adel, Cook County, Sparks, and Lenox, have absorbed that loss without passing the burden on to taxpayers.

No. Local police require the trust of the people they protect, even those here illegally.
