MOULTRIE — A sex offender was apprehended after he allegedly tried to sexually assault a 14-year-old girl Sunday afternoon.
Derek Terrell Davis, 37, of 133 Denham Road in Norman Park, was charged with cruelty to children (first degree), criminal attempt to commit child molestation, failure to report as a sexual offender (second offense) and probation violation.
Moultrie police officers were called to a house on Northside Drive at 4:36 p.m. Sunday about a possible assault. The officers spoke with a woman, who stated her 14-year-old daughter was walking home on 11th Avenue Northwest when she was approached by a man, later identified as Davis, police reports stated.
When the assailant reached the girl, she stated he threw her to the ground and tried to pull her shorts down. She tried kicking him in the stomach as a way to escape, but he allegedly grabbed her, threw her to the ground a second time and allegedly tried to rape her, the reports said.
The girl told officers she punched Davis in the face and was able to get up and run away. The girl sent a text message to her aunt about the incident, and the aunt met with the girl and called 911. Officers were also told Davis was still in the area visiting family when they arrived at the scene, the reports said.
A witness told officers an apartment number where they could find Davis, and a woman who answered the door there allegedly told them Davis was not there. As the witness went back in stating she would look for Davis, several people told officers Davis was trying to climb out of a window but ran back into the apartment when officers checked the window. The witness convinced Davis to turn himself in, and he was placed under arrest and was taken to Colquitt County Jail after allegedly being identified by the 14-year-old girl, the reports said.

• Monica Edwards reported a thief stole her BlackBerry cell phone after she left it at a house on Fourth Avenue Northeast Sunday. The value of the stolen cell phone was $250.
• Gina West reported a thief stole a Frigidaire window air conditioning unit from a house on Seventh Avenue Southeast Sunday. The value of the stolen air conditioner was $480.
• Gerald Grier, of 12th Street Northwest, reported a thief stole a jar containing coins inside and a checkbook between 7 a.m. Saturday and 12:13 p.m. Sunday. The value of the stolen items was $310. Grier gave officers the name of a female suspect.
• Craig Vail reported a thief stole his girlfriend’s Chevrolet Silverado from a house on West Boulevard between 7 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. Sunday. The value of the stolen vehicle was $12,300.
• Rolando Rodriguez, of 12th Avenue Southeast, reported someone keyed all over his Lincoln Town Car between midnight and 10:05 a.m. Sunday. Damage was estimated at $1,500.
• An employee at the Moultrie-Colquitt County Humane Society on First Street Northeast reported a thief stole a computer and a digital picture frame between 3:30 p.m. Saturday and 9:42 a.m. Sunday. The value of the stolen items was $930.
• Cynthia Bryant, of Seventh Avenue Southwest, reported someone broke a passenger window of her Dodge Neon between 1 a.m. and 9 a.m. Sunday.
• An employee at V Marie’s on East Central Avenue reported Saturday a female customer altered the price tag on a dress Nov. 13 and paid that amount. The value of the stolen dress was $350.
• Jamal Lee, of Seventh Street Northwest, reported someone punctured two tires and threw a brick at the trunk of his Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme between 1:30 a.m. and 11:39 a.m. Saturday.
• Janelle Jelks, of Seventh Avenue Northwest, reported a thief forced open the back door and stole a 27-inch television, a computer monitor, an Emerson microwave, two Peavy speakerboxes with four speakers each inside, a QSC amplifier set and an equalizer between Nov. 16 and 3:57 p.m. Friday. The value of the stolen items was $5,220.
• An employee at CVS Pharmacy on South Main Street reported Friday a thief stole several containers of baby formula. The value of the stolen baby formula was $1,212.

• Anna Harris, of Dennis Powell Lane in Norman Park, reported a thief pried open a back door and stole a Maytag washing machine between 3 p.m. Thursday and 12:01 a.m. Sunday. The value of the stolen washing machine was $450.
• Ashley Lamb, of Summerlin Road, reported a thief stole a Winchester 12-gauge shotgun from a vehicle between 5 p.m. Saturday and 8:30 a.m. Sunday. The value of the stolen shotgun was $100.
• Wes Smith reported a thief pried open the doors of his GMC Sierra dually work truck while it was parked on Bill Smith Road and stole a toolbox with Craftsman tools inside and an air compressor Sunday. The value of the stolen items was estimated at about $8,700.
• Lee Bass, of Bass Road in Doerun, reported a thief stole a jewelry box with jewelry inside, a leather box with jewelry inside and a jewelry hanger with jewelry on it between 7:30 a.m. Friday and 3:30 a.m. Saturday. The value of the stolen items was $600.
• Theresa McMillan, of Sylvester Highway, reported a thief stole a refrigerator and a stove between 8 p.m. Wednesday and 8 a.m. Thursday. The value of the stolen items was $2,000.
• Angelique Comer, of Sam Sells Road, reported a thief stole a check and forged and cashed it between Nov. 15 and noon Thursday. The amount of the forged check was $200. Comer gave sheriff’s deputies the name of a female suspect.
