MOULTRIE — Angelfood Ministries, a national ministry started in Monroe, Ga., is helping Colquitt County residents supplement their weekly groceries.
Tim Chaffey, Angelfood Ministries director for Colquitt County, said the ministry provides a variety of food to help everyone, regardless of income. Among the items on its monthly menu are meats, frozen vegetables, shelf stable milk, eggs and dessert items. All items are available for between $21 and $30 to provide enough food to feed an average family one meal per day for a week.
“It’s for every group and every church,” Chaffey said. “It’s available to anybody and everybody.”
Chaffey and his wife Laurie found out about the ministry through friends in Florida when they were looking for ways to save money in their monthly budgets. They were so impressed by the ministry they were given permission to start one here about a year ago. All counties surrounding Colquitt County already had Angelfood Ministries in place, it was noted.
The ministry was launched in 1994 to help feed factory workers and their families after an industry in Monroe was shut down, Chaffey said. Since then, it has grown to a national ministry, providing food to families to supplement their weekly groceries. Its motto is, “It’s not a hand out, it’s a hand up.”
In addition to the monthly menus offered, Chaffey said Angelfood is offered a special menu for Thanksgiving. It includes all of the regular fixings for a traditional Thanksgiving meal, except providing a hen instead of turkey, and is available to order through Wednesday, Oct. 28. Due to it being a special menu, it costs $36.
For more information about Angelfood Ministries, visit its Web site at www.angelfoodministries.com. Orders for the monthly menu items must be received online by Sunday, Nov. 8, or by check or EBT card by Thursday, Nov. 5, with distribution scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 14. Anyone wanting to pay by EBT card must call 891-3421 and make an appointment between noon and 3 p.m. on Nov. 5 to make payment.
