MOULTRIE — Despite reports of damage caused by storms and possibly a tornado in Sumter County overnight Thursday, Colquitt County was spared from any major damage.
Colquitt County Emergency Management Agency Director Russell Moody said Colquitt County had no major damage from the passing storm but did get a lot of rain. Water began to build up on roads throughout the county, but none were closed because of it.
The possibility of severe weather was there, however. Moody said a Colquitt County sheriff’s deputy spotted a possible tornado around Mitchell Suber Road near the Colquitt and Mitchell County line about 5:15 p.m. Thursday. The tornado did not touch down in Colquitt County and did not cause any damage.
The storm did cause some problems for City of Moultrie residents. City Utilities Director Roger King said there were pockets of power outages on North Main Street, Cherokee Drive and Camilla Highway. The power was restored by early Friday morning.
On North Main Street, King said, the winds blew some power lines together and limbs into the lines. Utility crews cleared the limbs and replaced a switch in the power lines to restore power.
The weather may have played a role in a tractor trailer that wrecked on Ellenton-Omega Road about 9 p.m. Thursday, closing the road down for about two hours. A report from the Georgia State Patrol about the accident was incomplete Friday afternoon but should be completed within the next few days.
Storm damage was reported in Sumter County as two businesses and one house were damaged by high winds, possibly a tornado, according to the Americus Times-Recorder.
