MOULTRIE — The 12th annual Music Under the Magnolia concert will be held Saturday, Oct. 17, at 8 p.m. at the Lewis Hill Amphitheater on the courthouse square. The featured group will be Wilson Williams and The Platters.
City of Moultrie Main Street Director Amy Johnson said the group came highly recommended by the community. She was very excited to get the group here and encourages everyone to come early and bring your lawn chairs for a great evening.
“Be ready to be entertained,” Johnson said.
The Platters have been performing since the 1950s and were the first African-American group to have a number one pop album. Some of their hit songs include “The Great Pretender,” “(You’ve Got) The Magic Touch,” “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes” and “Only You (And You Alone).” The current group is made up of Williams, Sasé, Lonza Bartlett and Melvin Whitaker.
Williams is one of four former Platters members still performing that has a claim to the group’s name and one of only two with a trademark of the name. He joined the group in 1995 and became its full-time manager the following year.
The concert is free to attend. Past performers at Music Under the Magnolia have included the Kinchafoonee Cowboys, Benny Anderson and the Drifters, The Swingin’ Medallions and The Legends of Doo Wop. Downtown restaurants and shops will be open prior to the concert.
