MOULTRIE —
One of two men accused of stealing checks in a burglary and cashing some of them has been charged with three additional counts of forgery.
John Stanley Griner, 52, 2344 Old Doerun Road, was arrested on Jan. 16 after a Moultrie police officer chased him down outside Harvey’s Supermarket in the 1200 block of First Avenue Southeast.
Police were tipped off by a convenience store employee who, after a man tried unsuccessfully to pass a suspicious check, followed him to the grocery store and alerted authorities.
When an officer tried to speak to Griner inside Harvey’s, he ran out, police said.
Griner and Burno Hewitt, 67, 724 10th St. S.E., were charged Jan. 23 with theft by receiving stolen property and forgery.
They are accused of having a check book that was reported stolen in a Jan. 11 burglary of Clyde Welch’s residence in the first block of Norman Street and of cashing one of the checks.
Welch also reported the theft of a .38-caliber pistol that has not been recovered. Police reports said that at the time of his arrest Griner had a check book that did not belong to him. On Monday Griner was charged with an additional three counts of forgery in connection with three of the stolen checks that were passed at Harvey’s, police Inv. Raul Leal said.
“We were able to determine he cashed all the checks at the same place, Harvey’s,” he said. “There’s a couple of other checks at a couple of other places we need to check.”
