Journalists tour food processing plants

MOULTRIE — Food writers from Europe, Brazil and Mexico got a look at Southwest Georgia during a recent tour of food processing facilities in the area.

In Moultrie the group, which included writers from France, Italy and Spain, visited the National Beef plant and had a dinner with area leaders at Sundown Farms.

The media members, who write for food processing journals, were briefed on some of the strengths of the area, including availability of water and workers as well as the variety of food commodities produced in the region.

The tour is part of the Georgia Department of Economic Development's effort to boost food processing in the state, said Tom Croteau, the agency's director of agribusiness, bioenergy, food processing and logistics. Food processing is the state's largest manufacturing sector and there is room for that to grow in places like Southwest Georgia.

"We're showing the kind of resources that are availalbe, the kinds of things that are grown and can be grown," he said. "The idea of the media tours is to expose journalists to the assets we have in Georgia, the resources in Georgia."

The tour started in Gainesville and also included a stop in Albany, where the writers toured the MillerCoors brewery, a stop at Golden Peanut in Terrell County and a South Georgia Pecan Co. in Valdosta.

"One of the things we talked about is the great availablity of water due to the aquifers, which is of great interest to food manufacturers," Croteau said. "One of the reasons we wanted to take the journalists to Southwest Georgia was we wanted them to be able to see the great growing capacity we have in the state as well."

Previous media tours have focused on logistics, alternative energy and aerospace.
