MOULTRIE —
Two Colquitt County school buses were involved in separate accidents Wednesday morning. One of the buses was transporting students, but no one reported being injured in either collision.
A Moultrie police officer was called to the 10th Street Southeast and Fifth Avenue Southeast intersection at 8:01 a.m. Wednesday about a two-vehicle accident. The officer spoke with Celia Smith, of Coolidge, who stated she was driving an International school bus and was stopped behind a Toyota Corolla, driven by Coty Thomas, of 7198 Third Ave. S.E.
Thomas told the officer he was waiting at the intersection for the traffic light to turn green when the school bus bumped into his rear bumper. Smith stated her foot slipped off the brake pedal while she was also waiting for the light to turn green.
There were 32 students on board the bus at the time of the collision, but no one reported being injured. There was only slight damage to the bus and to the Corolla. Smith was cited for following too closely, but Thomas was not cited or charged in the collision.
In a second accident, a Moultrie police officer was called to the intersection of Main Street and Central Avenue at 11:08 a.m. Wednesday. The officer spoke with William Hall, of 202 Magnolia Ave., who stated he was driving an International school bus on North Main Street approaching the Central Avenue intersection.
Before reaching the intersection, however, the bus hit a parked GMC Sierra truck, owned by Cory Mixon, of Meigs. The truck was parked in a 60-degree parking space on Main Street, and Hall said he thought he had clearance but didn’t.
Mixon stated he was not in the truck when the bus hit it in the rear, but another person who was in the truck did not report any injuries.
There was minor damage to the right tire and right side of the bus, but the truck was not damaged. Neither Hall nor Mixon were cited in the collision, but the truck was towed from the scene.
