Haggins bids farewell to council

MOULTRIE — After eight years on the Moultrie City Council and a lifetime of service, Betty Haggins is taking time to rest.

Haggins served in the city council for the final time at its meeting Tuesday, and she was recognized for her eight years of service. Moultrie Mayor William McIntosh presented her with a plaque stating two bricks will be placed near the Municipal Building in her honor.

Haggins said it felt fantastic to be presented the bricks, and she is looking forward to seeing them placed once the brick project is completed. She called her time serving on the council a great experience. While she chose not to run for reelection last fall, she said she was heartbroken that she will no longer be able to be a part of the council.

In addition to working to make Moultrie a better place, Haggins said she enjoyed being able to travel across the state for conferences and other events. She fondly remembered a conference she went to in Athens while on the council, and she enjoyed an opportunity to join other city representatives on a tour of Moody Air Force Base in Valdosta.

Haggins said the City of Moultrie saw no major changes since she began serving on the council. She was able to be a part of some minor changes to the city, however, and she is very proud of what she could help get accomplished.

“I can’t think of anything I would do differently,” Haggins said. “I did what I thought was best for the city.”

Haggins said she plans to just stay here in Moultrie and take it easy. She does not have any plans to travel.

In addition to her time on the council, Haggins, a lifelong resident of Colquitt County, has held many other positions of service. She retired as a program specialist from the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service, is a past president and lifetime member of the Colquitt County NAACP and has served on the board of directors for Habitat for Humanity, the American Red Cross and United Way of Colquitt County.

Haggins did offer some advice to the woman who succeeded her on the council, Susie Magwood-Thomas. She said Magwood-Thomas needs to just hang in there and do the best she can to help the citizens of Moultrie.
