ASHBURN —
The 5th group of paranormal investigators to check the old Turner County County Jail say they found “pretty strong” evidence of spectral activity at the old jail.
Diane Slomka points to a fuzzy photograph of the second floor taken at street level. In one photo there is a shadow in the lower part of the window. When enlarged, the photo shows a bust-shaped shadow with a white dot where a nose would be and two darker shadows where eyes would be. The investigators also point to what they call hair in the image.
Pictures taken about 30 seconds later from a slightly different angle do not have the shadowy image. Brent Potter took the pictures. “I felt like that was pretty strong,” Ms. Slomka said. “That’s a shadow he caught in the women’s cells. I am really pleased with this.”
The group believes the image is of a woman.
“One of the girls on our team did research on the jail. Those three cells were the only cells where women were held back then,” Ms. Slomka said.
The old jail was closed in 1994.
The team also reported “activity” in the death cell, sometimes called the Bull Pen.
“There was someone standing in the corner when they were standing in the room, they hearing a dragging of feet kind of thing, a shuffling,” Ms. Slomka said. “A little later Joanna went in and heard the same kind of thing.
“When I was in there I heard a young male, a black male’s voice. It was a whisper. I don’t know what it said. I did recognize the tone as being in the late 20s, young black male. Definitely it was.”
Christy Casey said another team member also reported hearing a voice in the same place. “I believe it was Dave or Jake who picked up (that it was) a black male,” Mrs. Casey said. “It was very interesting,” Ms. Slomka said.
The group has been to the old jail twice for investigations. Ms. Slomka and Mrs. Casey said the team is still reviewing audio tapes made during the investigations.
The group can be reached through their website www.justghost.com
The old jail is now the Crime & Punishment museum. It is operated by the Historical Preservation Commission and the Chamber of Commerce. Tours are available Tuesday-Friday 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and on Saturdays by appointment.

CORRECTION: DUI charge
In a Jan. 28 report, The Observer said Ronald Craig Bass, 50, 4411 Dunn Road, Hartsfield, was charged Jan. 26 with driving under the influence, open container violation and probation violation in connection with a minor wreck on Camilla Highway. Excluding the probation violation charge, that information came from a Moultrie police report of a November 2001 incident.
Bass was charged with probation violation Thursday because all the penalties from the 2001 incident had not been paid. He paid the remaining penalties following his arrest, according to a Moultrie police report.
The Observer regrets the error. -
