MOULTRIE — Two people were arrested after they allegedly left three children unattended inside a running vehicle Friday afternoon.

Jose Sanchez, 24, and Sonia Maribel Mazariegos Lopez, 24, both of 1124 Circle Road, were each charged with three counts of reckless conduct.

A Moultrie police officer was called to Wal-Mart on South Veterans Parkway at 5:39 p.m. Friday about unattended children. The officer spoke with a store employee, who stated three children, two 6-month-olds and a 3-year-old, were left inside a running vehicle.

About 15 minutes later, the officers spoke with the parents, identified as Sanchez and Lopez. They stated they went into the store to make a purchase and did not want to wake up the children. They also stated they only intended to be in the store for a short amount of time, police reports stated.

Both Sanchez and Lopez were placed under arrest, and the Department of Family and Children’s Services (DFCS) was called to the scene. Sanchez and Lopez were taken to Colquitt County Jail, and the children were turned over to a family friend while the DFCS representative began an investigation.
