MOULTRIE —
The United Way of Moultrie and Colquitt County is asking local groups to submitt applications for grant money available through its Teens Taking Charge program.
The annual program began in 2008, according to a press release from the UW. Any 501 (c) (3) United Way member agency or elementary, middle or high school club or organization can apply. Programs that will be considered for funding are those that benefit the youth of Colquitt County.
What makes this program unusual — and gives rise to its name — is that a panel of teen-agers will decide who receives the grant money, up to $500 per project.
Two panels — both made up of teens from the Moultrie-Colquitt County Chamber of Commerce Leadership Colquitt County Program — will consider applications. Each panel has about 10 members, according to United Way Executive Director Angela Castellow.
Last year’s panels awarded five grants, totaling $2,000:
• $500 to a program for the hearing impaired operated by the Children’s Cheer and Toy Shop.
• $500 to Serenity House to help with matching funds for a grant for a transitional afterschool program for children at the Housing Authority.
• $200 to the Boys and Girls Club for a teen evening program.
• $300 to Lifespring Church for a middle-school age afterschool program.
• $500 to Friendship Baptist Church for its summrer youth program.
More information and an application are available from Castellow. Call her at (229) 985-2627 or email her at uwcolquitt@moultriega.net.
