MOULTRIE —
A woman accused in the fatal shooting of her live-in boyfriend in June has been indicted by a Colquitt County grand jury.
Gina Ann Thompson, 44, was indicted on charges of malice murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
Thompson, a nurse, is accused of shooting 54-year-old Johnny Crawford on the night of June 21 at their 1445 U.S. 319 S. home.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said that Crawford was shot multiple times.
Thompson was arrested the morning after the shooting when law enforcement authorities did not believer her story of a break-in in which Crawford was shot by an intruder. She also reported being shot in the assault in which Crawford was shot in the torso and shoulder, but law enforcement said she had no visible injuries.
Authorities have not released a motive for the shooting, but said a pistol believed to have been used in the slaying was found the day of the shooting. The GBI also has not said what led them to believe Thompson was not being truthful, but said that after comparing her story to the crime scene “stuff did not add up to anybody (else) doing it.”
The agency said that the couple had been involved in domestic situations in the past.
This apparently includes an Aug., 17, 2011, incident in which an officer investigating reports of shots fired near the couple’s home was told by witnesses that Thompson fired a gun into the air because she was upset with Crawford.
Crawford had a drug conviction in 1987 and had been charged in 1983 with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in a case that was dismissed.
He also was at the scene of two shootings in 1979, one of which was fatal.
In one of those incidents, Jimmy Salter was fatally shot at Crawford’s residence in a case that law enforcement ruled to be self-defense.
Crawford told authorities that he shot Salter after Salter shot him in the leg and he wrestled Salter’s .357 Magnum pistol away from him. Salter was shot four times, once through the heart.
