Waldon surrenders, escapes, is recaptured

MOULTRIE — A robbery suspect who turned himself in Wednesday night only to flee from officers on Thursday could have added five years to his sentence if convicted on the escape charge.

Jarrod Quentea Waldon turned himself in at about 8 p.m. Wednesday at Colquitt County Jail, said Cpl. William Stone, a Moultrie Police Department investigator.

Waldon, who is accused in recent armed robberies at EZ Corner convenience store and Subway, was taken Thursday morning to the police department for questioning.

“While the officer was escorting him to the car to take him back to the jail he escaped,” Stone said. “We had a brief foot pursuit and we caught him again.”

Waldon was out of custody for about two to five minutes before he was recaptured at about 9 a.m. about a block and a half from the station, Stone said.

A prisoner who escapes from custody prior to being convicted can receive a prison sentence of from one to five years.

In the month of January gunmen robbed four convenience stores in Moultrie along with the Subway restaurant on West Central Avenue.

Stone said Waldon has not been ruled out as a suspect in two unsolved robberies of Best Little Store in Georgia and Tallokas Express. However, as of Thursday there was no evidence connecting him to those hold-ups either.

“We don’t have any other suspects at this time,” Stone said.

Waldon, 26, 410 Seventh St. N.W., has been charged with two counts of armed robbery and escape.

He has served three years in prison after pleading guilty in 2003 to the New Year’s 2000 fatal shooting of 14-year-old Atticus Jones. Waldon, who was 15 at the time of the slaying, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and served about three years in jail and prison. He later served about five years after pleading guilty in 2006 to two counts of criminal attempt to commit armed robbery. He was released from prison on Sept. 26.

Meanwhile, February began as did New Year’s Day, with a gunman demanding money.

On Wednesday night, Joshua Hancock of Norman Park reported that a gunman tried to rob him outside the U.S. Post Office, 25 N. Main St.

Hancock went inside the building at about 8:45 p.m. and when he came out someone came up from behind and brandished a firearm, Stone said.

“He said I don’t have any money, and showed him his wallet was empty,” Stone said. “He (robber) said ‘OK’ and took off running.”

No one was injured in the incident and the gunman did not get any money, he said.
