MOULTRIE —
Residents of Norman Park will be electing a new mayor and at least two new council members in the November General Election following qualifying last week.
For mayor of Norman Park, current mayor Sandy Hurst did not qualify to run for re-election in November. Mark Powell and current Councilman Bruce Norton did qualify to run for mayor and will face each other in that contest.
Two council seats, currently held by Norton and Sam Brown, will also be up for election. Brown did qualify to keep his council seat, but he will face opposition from Harold Covey, Helen Sutton and Lawrence Hand for the two seats.
A special election will also be held for the vacated council seat of Danny Walker, who stepped down from the council earlier this year. Randy Adams and Tony Conger qualified to fill Walker’s vacant seat on the council.
Other municipalities that held qualifying last week will not hold local elections because the incumbents were the only ones to qualify. In Funston, council members Bobby Ruis, Dobson Striplin and Jerry Smith will keep their seats, and Riverside Mayor Tom Harlow and Councilwoman Elaine Snipes qualified and will retain their positions. In Doerun, council members Richard Bridwell, Mike Campbell and Donald Irvin will keep their council seats after no one qualified for the city’s elections.
