Pastor pedals back to park after statewide ride

REED BINGHAM STATE PARK — The “Pedaling Pastor” will make his return to Reed Bingham State Park Saturday following a 700-mile bicycle ride.

Park Manager Chet Powell said Chris Newbern, pastor of First Assembly of God in Adel, is expected to return to the park between 2:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday. The finish line to his 700-mile trip will be at the park’s beach pavilion, and the park is planning a bike day for the return.

Newbern rode his bicycle from the park Sept. 6, and pedaled to several state parks within Georgia, Powell said. Parks visited during the ride include Seminole State Park near Bainbridge, the Franklin Delano Roosevelt State Park near Columbus, Georgia Veterans State Park in Cordele, Little Ocmulgee State Park and General Coffee State Park.

Powell said Newbern made the ride to raise awareness about the budget crunch in Georgia and its effect on state parks. The ride was a fundraiser, and all proceeds collected will go to local charities, and nine Cook County charities will be helped by donations.

In addition to the welcoming event, Powell said the park plans to offer bike tours throughout the park. There will also be a giveaway for three touring bicycles for those in attendance. The park’s regular programming will also be available.
