Producers can fine-tune their farming operations with information gained at the 36th annual Georgia Peanut Farm Show on Thursday, Jan. 19, at the Albany Civic Center in Albany, Ga. The show is sponsored by the Georgia Peanut Commission in cooperation with the University of Georgia.
During this year's show Kelley Manufacturing Company is providing the Grand Door Prize of one season's use of a new four- or six-row peanut combine, valued at $10,000. At the end of the 2012 season the winner has the option of purchasing the combine from a KMC dealer after a reduction in the list price of $10,000. Additionally, KMC will provide $1,500 in cash to another lucky winner in recognition of the Georgia Peanut Commission's 50th anniversary. The Grower Prize, donated by Amadas Industries, is a certificate for $10,000 towards the purchase of a peanut combine.
"We are excited to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Georgia Peanut Commission during the annual Georgia Peanut Farm Show this year," says Rodney Dawson, chairman of the Georgia Peanut Farm Show Committee. "We encourage all growers to attend the one-day show which offers a variety of educational seminars and industry exhibits featuring new products and services."
The one-day show offers farmers a full day to view the products and services of more than 80 exhibitors and a day of education. The show opens at 8:30 a.m. with door prize registration and closes at 3:45 p.m. with the announcement of the grand door prize winner. The Georgia Peanut Commission will present a short program beginning at 11:15 a.m. that will cover award presentations and other special recognitions. A free luncheon will follow for all peanut farmers in attendance and an opportunity for farmers to win more than $40,000 in door prizes.
"The Georgia Peanut Commission is also partnering with the Southeastern Community Blood Center and will hold a blood drive on the day of the show," Dawson says. "We encourage all farmers and industry representatives to participate in the blood drive in order to help those in need."
The Georgia Peanut Commission in cooperation with the Southeastern Community Blood Center will hold the blood drive from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Albany Civic Center during the farm show.
The University of Georgia will present an educational peanut production seminar at 9 a.m. focusing on peanut cultivars, managing white mold, pigweed control, insect management, and marketing options for 2012. There will also be a town hall discussion on the critical needs in peanut research and extension. Growers who participate in the peanut production seminar will earn credit towards pesticide certification.
An Industry Seed Seminar will also be held at 1:30 p.m. during the show. This event is sponsored by the American Peanut Shellers Association, Peanut Foundation, Southern Peanut Farmers Federation and the Georgia Peanut Commission. Growers will be able to learn about the peanut varieties available for 2012, calcium sources and timing of application for peanuts, planting date strategies, and ways to reduce seed planting costs.
