CCHS places 2nd at math tourney

Albany State University Department of Mathematics and Computer Science hosted its annual High School Mathematics Tournament in Simmons Hall Feb. 25. A total of 70 students representing eight area schools participated in the tournament.
For the second consecutive year, Tattnall Square Academy of Macon took top honors in the team competition. Colquitt County High School took second place, and Lee County High School finished in third place. Lindsey Murphy of Tattnall Square Academy took first place in the individual competition. Eric Kirkland of Colquitt County High School and Taylor Morgan of Tattnall Square Academy tied for second place honors. C. J. Bateman of Colquitt County High School and Taylor Holloway of Tattnall Square Academy tied for third.
“This event is very important in highlighting our students’ academic achievements in mathematics and computer science,” said Rhonda Porter, assistant professor of mathematics and chair of the ASU Mathematics Tournament. “Mathematics and computer science are two of the top academic areas in our country. It is vital that these areas be nurtured, developed and, of course, celebrated.”
Participating schools were Albany High School, Americus/Sumter High School, Colquitt County High School, Dougherty County High School, Lee County High School, Perry High School, Tattnall Square Academy in Macon and Westover High School in Albany.
The students who took top honors from their respective schools and the names of their advisors were also recognized at the event. Those who took the honors were:
• Jailyn Rambo from Albany High School, with advisor Karin Milner.
• Minh Nguyen from Americus/Sumter High School with advisor D. Ndaayezwi and F. Rankine.
• Eric Kirkland from Colquitt County High School with advisor Rebecca Croft.
• Joshua Christina and Thomas Gridley from Dougherty High School with advisor Carmenza Foster.
• Emily Butts from Lee County High School with advisor Christy Busby.
• Kayla Heesh from Perry High School with advisor Richard Kilburn.
• Lindsey Murphy from Tattnall Square Academy with advisor Carolyn Smothers.
• Ellen Roberts from Westover High School with advisor Renu Angira.
