MOULTRIE —
While frost covers most local farms and gardens, a new farmers market for Tifton is already heating up for its first season.
Wiregrass Farmers Market, to be located at the Georgia Museum of Agriculture and Historic Village, will open Saturday, April 14, from 9 a.m. until noon, and continue every Saturday through the summer and until the end of October.
Local farmers, gardeners and artisans will sell locally and regionally grown fresh produce, nuts, eggs, herbs, plants, mushroom logs and other farm products. Local artisans will offer homemade breads; jams and jellies; all-natural, handmade soaps and salves; medicinal herb products; fresh-roasted coffee; and natural crafts.
“The museum is the perfect agricultural setting for a farmers market,” said Leeann Culbreath, a volunteer coordinator for the new market. “We are excited to have a large, historic space for vendors and customers as well as unique opportunities to educate the community about local farming, gardening and healthy cooking through hands-on activities and classes.”
The market will be located in the pole barn adjacent to the museum’s Country Store on Whiddon Mill Road. Tickets to the museum will not be required to enter the market area or the Country Store, which also boasts many Georgia-made products.
“The Georgia Museum of Agriculture celebrates the return to a lifestyle which is built on local, fresh, clean food and a sense of community,” said Polly Huff, the GMA’s gallery curator who will serve as the market’s liaison. “The new Wiregrass Farmers Market is going to give our visitors an opportunity to meet the farmer who grew or made the products in their basket, and will also provide great opportunities to learn and have fun outdoors as a family. We have plans for children’s activities and farm demonstrations such as shearing, milking, spinning, and more,” Huff added.
Those wishing to become a vendor at the Wiregrass Farmers Market should contact Huff at (229) 391-5222 or phuff@abac.edu to receive a copy of the vendor guidelines and an application.
The market plans to kick off the season with a progressive dinner on the grounds of the Historic Village on Friday, March 9. Diners will have a chance to sample dishes made from local produce and meats, tour the village under lamplight, hear folk tunes played by local musicians, and enjoy a meet-and-greet with local farmers and artisans participating in the new market.
