Deputies say inmates were 'fishing' for contraband

MOULTRIE — Two Colquitt County Jail inmates are on the hook in what was described as a clever scheme to reel contraband weapons and drugs into the facility.

As a result of an investigation of a broken window, six people were charged this week and accused of roles in smuggling the illegal materials into the jail.

A sheriff’s investigator said that the four people on the outside filled socks with contraband, attached fishing hooks and got them into the yard outside the inmates’ window.

“The people inside then would use a sock with something in it to give it weight,” investigator Jim Brown said.

They would throw that sock outside and pull it along to catch a fish hook and reel the sock containing contraband into the jail.

The investigation began when a damaged window was found earlier this week. The next day jail staff found contraband outside in the yard, Brown said.

“We have recovered a sock with a string attached to the end,” Brown said.

Drops of the illegal material were made on at least two occasions he said. In addition to the sock thought to have been used in the scheme, the sheriff’s office also recovered knives, drugs and cell phones.

The inmates charged were:

• Jason Lee Baird, 26, 1522 Funston-Sale City Road; two counts of crossing guard lines with weapons, intoxicants or drugs, use of a communications facility to facilitate a drug transaction, items prohibited for possession by inmates, possession of marijuana, possession of a cell phone by an inmate and two counts of conspiracy to provide items prohibited for possession by inmates.

• Rodney Shane Fulgham, 27, 2010 West Blvd.; two counts conspiracy to obtain items prohibited by inmates and use of a communication facility to facilitate a drug transaction.

Fulgham was charged earlier in the week with interference with government property in connection with the damage to the window.

Also charged were:

• Jamie Dwayne Prosser, 23, 2607 R.L. Sears Road Lot 6; conspiracy to provide items prohibited for possession by inmates.

• Tonya Terrell, 35, 314 Third St. S.E.; two counts conspiracy to provide items prohibited by inmates, party to the crime of crossing guard lines and two counts party to the crime of items prohibited for possession by inmates.

• Brooke Nicole Tillman, 18, 1214 Cool Springs Road; conspiracy to provide items prohibited for possession by inmates.

• Angel Crisostomo, 26, 278 Big Bear Blvd.; party to the crime of crossing guard lines with contraband.
