MOULTRIE — Law enforcement officials were involved in at least two separate pursuits Sunday. The driver in one of those pursuits was apprehended after wrecking the vehicle he was driving.
James Edward Kastelic, 39, of 695 Highway 319 N., was charged with attempting to elude officers, driving with a suspended license, no proof of insurance, operating an unregistered vehicle and passing in a no-passing zone.
A Colquitt County sheriff’s deputy attempted to pull over an Isuzu Rodeo that allegedly was driving recklessly on Highway 319 North at 3:41 p.m. Sunday. The driver, later identified as Kastelic, allegedly would not stop as the deputy continued to pursue him.
A second deputy met up with the deputy and the Rodeo as the pursuit passed Indian Lake Drive. The Rodeo turned onto Woodmen Road and allegedly drove through stop signs at the Highway 133 North, Sylvester Highway and Sylvester Drive intersections at a high rate of speed. Troopers from the Georgia State Patrol were also involved in the pursuit.
The Rodeo began pulling away from the deputies, but the lead deputy reporting the vehicle had been involved in an accident on Woodmen Road. The second deputy stopped at the accident scene and detained occupants of a Chevrolet Suburban, who were possibly trying to leave the scene, while the first deputy continued down Woodmen Road and into a wooded area, where Kastelic allegedly fled after abandoning his vehicle. Moultrie police officers arrived at the scene and assisted with traffic control.
A deputy spotted Kastelic lying face down on the ground about 10 feet away, and he was placed under arrest and taken to Colquitt County Jail after being treated at the accident scene by Colquitt County EMS.
In a second pursuit, a Moultrie police officer was at the Waffle House on First Avenue Southeast at 3:14 a.m. Sunday for a special patrol. Several other officers were in the area when the officer spotted a vehicle, possibly a Chevrolet Caprice, that appeared to be suspicious. It was still in the parking lot but did not have its headlights on while about the pull out onto Second Avenue Southeast.
As the vehicle turned onto Second Avenue Southeast, the officer reported hearing four or five gunshots. Another officer got behind the vehicle as it turned onto Fifth Avenue Southeast from Lane Street and pursued it as it made several turns before getting onto Seventh Avenue Southeast. A deputy continued to pursue the vehicle after an officer went into a ditch off the roadway, but the vehicle was out of sight as the chase reached Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Eighth Avenue Northwest.
The first officer spoke with employees at Waffle House, and no one was reported injured there. It was not known if the restaurant had any damage as a result of the gunshots fired.
