MOULTRIE — The Moultrie Police Department charged three motorists Thursday night with driving under the influence, in one instance chasing a vehicle at speeds up to 80 miles per hour, police reports said.
At 1:16 a.m. Friday police were sent to First Avenue Southeast on a call of an intoxicated driver. The officer began following a 2009 GMC Yukon on Georgia Highway 133 South, noting that the driver apparently increased speed in an attempt to elude him. The officer reached a speed of 80 miles an hour as he tried to overtake the Yukon, police said.
When the officer turned on emergency lights the driver continued driving at about 55 miles per hour and did not stop after two officers got behind the Yukon and turned on sirens and emergency lights.
When the driver stopped at Highway 133 and Newsome Road officers noticed the smell of alcohol coming from the vehicle. Officers found an opened beer in the vehicle.
