Separate traffic stops yield drug arrests

MOULTRIE — Law enforcement officers apprehended two men overnight Monday on drug and traffic violations.

John Edward Brown, 41, of 3031 Highway 33 N., was charged with possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute, possession of Hydrocodone with the intent to distribute, tag lights required and driving with a suspended license.

A Moultrie police officer spotted a Pontiac Vibe with a tag light not working while on patrol on North Veterans Parkway at 11:21 p.m. Monday. The officer pulled the vehicle over and spoke with the driver, identified as Brown, while a second officer arrived at the scene and had his K-9 do an outside search of the car.

The K-9 indicated there were suspected drugs in the Vibe, and the officers asked Brown to exit the car. He was searched for weapons, but officers noticed a bulge in a cargo pocket, and Brown allowed them to search it.

The officer allegedly found a bag of suspected marijuana in Brown’s pocket, and he was placed under arrest. A search of the Vibe allegedly turned up three baggies of additional suspected marijuana with white pills, believed to be Hydrocodone medication, inside.

Brown was taken to Colquitt County Jail, and officers confirmed the white pills were Hydrocodone.

In a second incident, David Dewayne Spradley, 27, of 813 West Blvd., was charged with possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute, obstruction, failure to stop at a stop sign, defective equipment, attempting to elude officers, running a red light, driving with a suspended license and probation violation.

A Colquitt County sheriff’s deputy on patrol spotted a Cadillac CTS with a tag light not working pulling onto South Veterans Parkway at 1:11 a.m. Tuesday. The deputy pulled the car over into the South Georgia Bank parking lot, but the driver allegedly fled the scene when the deputy began walking toward the car and got onto Fifth Avenue Southeast.

The deputy got behind the CTS, reaching speeds up to 90 mph but not passing any other cars, as it allegedly went through the stop light at the 10th Street Southeast intersection. The car turned onto Seventh Street Southeast, allegedly running a stop sign, before turning onto Eighth Avenue Southeast.

The CTS then pulled into a vacant lot and the driver, identified as Spradley, fled the scene on foot. The car was not put in park when the driver got out, and it rolled into a house on Ninth Avenue Southeast.

The deputy got out of his patrol car and ran after Spradley until reaching a wooded area on 10th Avenue Southeast. As other deputies arrived at the scene to provide light, Spradley was heard running through the woods, and he was found and placed under arrest and taken to Colquitt County Jail.

The deputy went back to where Spradley allegedly threw something into a yard as he fled, and it was found to be a plastic bag with suspected marijuana inside. A set of digital scales and other baggies were allegedly found, and everything was given to a Colquitt County Drug Enforcement Team agent.
